chasing waterfalls. these are the haruru falls close to paihia, bay of islands. they are very easy to reach - it’s a nice little walk, manageable even with a toddler in tow. ___________________________________________________________ dies sind die haruru faelle in der naehe von paihia, bay of islands. sie sind sehr leicht ueber einen kleinen, gut ausgebauten pfad zu erreichen, auch mit kleinkind im gepaeck.

Haruru falls!
The hostel i stayed at in Paihia was really nice, very homey with two living room areas, log fires and a view over the bay. It was also a really great place for meeting people (much better than anywhere I’d been in Auckland). After my boat trip I got chatting to a few people which turned into a whole bunch of people playing cards and when i mentioned that I was thinking of doing the long walk through the mangroves out to Haruru falls I ended up with a whole team of people coming out with me :)
The walk turned out to be QUITE LONG but definitely more fun with company, including fish feeding and waterfall jumping (sadly just for the guys, since none of us girls had thought to bring swimwear and there were a few too many families around to go in anyway ;) )
Diesmal sind die Bilder ungewöhnlich finster. An meinem dritten Tag in Neuseeland fahr ich von Auckland nach Paihia. Paihia liegt in der “Bay of Islands” und ist mit 1.700 Einwohnern sehr überschaubar. Bekannt ist der Paihia durch seine Nähe zu Waitangi. Hier wurde 1840 der für Neuseeland und die Maori so wichtige “Vertrag von Waitangi” zwischen Vertretern der britischen Krone und Maori-Häuptlingen unterzeichnet. Der Vertrag gilt als Gründungsdokument von Neuseeland und garantiert den Maori den Erhalt und die Herrschaft über ihr Land und ihre Kultur.
Das Wetter juckt all das wenig und so erwartet mich dort Regen. Ich bin aber dennoch zuversichtlich und buche für die nächsten beiden Tage Touren. Den Rest des Tages nutze ich noch schnell für den “Haruru Falls Track”. Der Track startet im Norden von Paihia und schlängelt sich 5 km durch Wald, über kleine Stege durch Mangrovenwälder und endet an den Haruru Falls. Auch wenn es etwas trist aussieht und leider Ebbe ist, ist der Weg wirklich schön. Zurück quäle ich mich an der Straße lang, da ich den Rückweg vorher gekonnt verdrängt habe :)
By far the best experience we've paid for was a sunset kayak tour to Haruru Falls in Waitangi. As the sun sets you kayak up the river yo the fall, then try your hardest to paddle underneath the waterfall. And enjoy the peaceful, sunset on the paddle back. We capsized under the falls which was hilarious.
