The People of HashtagNYU

Over our six-year run, we believed, among many things, that our team succeeded and failed together. We chose to never sign posts as individuals, instead taking collective ownership of our content. For our last post, we’re flipping the script.

In saying goodbye, we want to highlight the voices and experiences of the people who made HashtagNYU possible. These were the students who wrote tweets, snapped photos, shot videos, wrote posts, and so much more. We were the people behind the screen hoping to inform and delight you with each and every post.

To capture the experience, we asked our near-hundred alumni one simple question:

In 140 characters or less, what was HashtagNYU for you?

HashtagNYU was started six years ago to improve the way we communicate with students, to delight you and build a shared sense of community, and to share the NYU story, one photo, tweet, and video at a time. We had some Real Talk, we met incoming first-years through One Word. One World., we built Momentum, we started critical conversations on campus around Consent, and we shared a lot of GIFs.

It’s been an incredible ride, and we’d like to announce that we’ll be graduating from the social media game alongside the Class of 2018. Though our content will live on, our team is focusing on awesome new projects in our mission to improve the NYU student experience. Like countless seniors before us, we’re filled with wonderful memories as well as lots of feelings. We’re so grateful to have taken this journey with all of you, and so excited for the work ahead of us — stay tuned in the coming weeks as we unveil our ~final thesis~, for starters!

Coffee Crawl Around The Square

One thing most NYU students will admit to is their addiction to coffee. Whether you are running between classes and internships, or finally put down some time in your calendar for a catch-up with your friend from study away, coffee is the fuel of every NYU-er. Since we know you loved our previous recommendations for your Coffee Crawl, here’s a freshly brewed list of coffee spots around Washington Square to keep you caffeinated year-round.

Gregory’s Coffee

This modest gem on Broadway is the perfect stop before your class in Mercer. With its wooden wall and plants, the raw design complements its rich, aromatic coffee.

Must try: Signature Lattes: Elderberry, Matcha and Turmeric

Perfect for: The chill atmosphere will help you calmly deal with your backlog of readings

Right around the corner from Kimmel, Irving Farm Roasters is an NYU hit, with a sleek interior design, Instagram-worthy food, and coffee that will keep you coming back for more.

MUD

Infamous for its MUD “truck” concept, you can find these freshly-brewed mugs of coffee on a hassled morning at 2nd Ave or Astor Place. Power your strut to class with a stylish cup of coffee and some kickass music.

Perfect for: The days you’re late to class but still need some caffeine

Third Rail Coffee

One of NYU’s hole-in-the-wall favorites — for its affordability and quaint atmosphere — Third Rail has mastered latte art and the perfect espresso. It is the perfect spot for grabbing some rejuvenating coffee.

Perfect for: A morning breakfast before your afternoon class

The Bean

Known for its rustic atmosphere, quirky drink names, and eccentric food presentation, The Bean is an NYC staple. Whether you’re catching up with friends or taking a break between classes, you’ll feel right at home.

Perfect For: Coffee catch-ups with friends

Madman Espresso

A small coffee spot on University Place, Madman Espresso specializes in those mornings you just need a very strong dose of caffeine. Light on the wallet, but effective on driving the sleep away, a cup of their espresso will give you all the fuel you need for the rest of the day!

Hungry Ghost Coffee

Originally from Brooklyn, and sourcing their coffee from Stumptown, Hungry Ghost is conveniently located in the Tisch Building on Broadway. Its lounge setting and delicious spread of meals and pastries is ideal for a coffee and lunch break between classes.

Must try: Cold Brew Nitro

Perfect For: Casual lunch break between classes thanks to its delicious spread of food and pastries

Flushing Out Your Portfolio: Tips & Tricks

Starting your portfolio might be scary at first, but we’re here to help! Portfolios can include anything from video reels, writing samples, blogs, design, and photography. There’s a whole range of creativity! Here are our tips to help you build an amazing portfolio:

1. Everybody Starts from Somewhere

Not being a pro shouldn’t stop you from creating content and putting it in your portfolio. With practice, you can start becoming the best you can be! 

2. Work is Work

You can flesh out your portfolio with more than just official, professional work. Things you do for NYU classes and extracurriculars definitely count! If it’s something you’ve taken time out of your busy schedule to do, then it’s worth putting on your portfolio. 

3. Self-Initiated Projects

Even if you don’t have anything forcing you to create (classes, clubs, or jobs) that doesn’t mean you can’t. Daily challenges and self-initiated projects compel you to practice and fine-tune your skills! Make your own personal film around Washington Square or take snaps on the NYC subway! You’re here at NYU for a reason – NYC is your playground, so use it.

4.  Gain Experience and Get Involved

Being a part of an organization (university or professional) can get you to create. Join a club you enjoy and start creating! Being at NYU gets you the best resources for career advice and connections! Start networking — you never know who you’ll meet. 

5. Know the Tools of Your Trade

Take advantage of NYU’s resources to become a pro on the tools of your trade! You can always go to Bobst, the LaGuardia Co-Op, or the Makerspace for programs. There are computer labs scattered throughout NYU! LaGuardia Co-Op and MAGNET also offer recording rooms. If you’re on a budget, you could always borrow equipment like cameras and lights from Tisch or MAGNET. Lynda.com also offers thousands of free courses and tutorials through your netID. And if you’re ready to invest in yourself, don’t forget that Adobe’s Creative Cloud offers discounts to NYU affiliates. That’s a LOT of resources, so don’t let them pass you by!

6. Know Your Goals

Maybe you want to work a little bit on everything and show a well-rounded set of skills, or maybe you want to focus on your strengths and really excel at those. Choose your goal and build your confidence — no one can be the best in everything.

7. Invest in Your Website

When we say invest, we don’t mean just with money, but with time. Putting the effort into making a sleek website is super impressive. There are free ones such as Wix, Weebly, Wordpress, Tumblr, and more! And if you have the budget, there’s Squarespace or Adobe Portfolio (complimentary for Creative Cloud subscribers)!

8.  Exercise Confidence 

Don’t be afraid to try something new! Even if you don’t think it’s your best work, someone else could! Not everyone can do what you can do. Be proud of your work and it’ll show in your portfolio! Bring on that NYU swagger.

9.  Be Inspired

Looking up to someone from your field is a great way to become driven. This could be someone from school or even someone famous (in NYU’s case, it could be both)! Other sources of inspiration could be websites such as Behance, Dribble, or Pinterest!

10.  Have Fun With It

Having a portfolio is a great way to get yourself out there. And you’re at the best place to get started! Use those NYU resources and be the best Violet you could be.

NYU Tandon Gems

Unless you go to school in Brooklyn, NYU Tandon may sound like a fairytale from somewhere far, far away. It may be, but that shouldn’t stop you from visiting! Here are the top five reasons why you should visit:

Campus

1. Makerspace

Located inside the main NYU Tandon building, 6 MetroTech Center, the MakerSpace provides access to advanced software, milling machines, 3D printers, and more to students and faculty. Just opened in 2016, the collaborative workspace has already ingrained itself into the heart of NYU Tandon. If you’re planning your next business tech venture, this is the place to go.

2. Magnet

Magnet aka (the Media and Games Network) is home to the NYU Game Center — an open library filled with over 2,000 games and consoles. Arcade games and VR gear decorate the creative space. Located on the 8th floor of 2 MetroTech Center, the area is dedicated to Integrated Digital Media and Game Engineering. Got nothing else to do? Then come to NYU Tandon for the promised land of gaming!

Off-Campus

1. DUMBO / Brooklyn Bridge Park

Fifteen minutes by foot from NYU Tandon is insta-heaven. DUMBO aka (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is a haven for technology startups. The DUMBO incubator, facilitated by NYU Tandon, resides in the neighborhood, boosting tech and media activity in Brooklyn. So if you’re in the mood for a good Instagram pic or got an idea for a new tech start-up, then pop on by DUMBO.

2. Brooklyn Heights Promenade

Also within walking distance, a mere twenty minutes, is the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, another insta-heaven. With views of Lower Manhattan’s skyline and the Statue of Liberty, it is a must-see. If you’re planning to take someone on a date or just to get something off your mind, the Promenade is the best place to go. The views couldn’t get any better than this.

3. City Point

Opened in 2017, City Point has put Downtown Brooklyn on the map for holding one of the city’s largest food halls — DeKalb Market Hall. Boasting both a Target and Trader Joe’s, City Point also is home to the Alamo Drafthouse, a dine-in theater experience. Once you have their burgers and shakes, you’ll never want just popcorn again.

Proof that NYU Still Has the Coolest Classes

It’s that time of the semester — midterms are (still) weighing heavy on your mind, while thanksgiving break plans are weighing heavy on your pocket. You are running low on sleep and high on caffeine. You open your e-mail and see a new message from your advisor: “Get ready for Spring 2018 pre-clearance registration!” Great, now you have to sit and browse Albert for courses for next year. Well, we’ve got some good news for you — as one of the top 30 colleges in the US, NYU offers some pretty cool classes every semester. Here’s saving you the trouble of finding some of the most interesting and engaging Spring 2018 courses!

Money and the Good Life (CCEA-UH 1014) at NYU Abu Dhabi

What: This course examines cultural concepts of money and wealth. Is the value of men measured by the value of their money, or are there other criteria for wealth? Is someone’s wealth possible without someone else’s poverty? How is human ambition rewarded or punished in the “pecuniary culture?” It’s got all the answers, and some pretty interesting questions!

Why: You get to compare and contrast works of Fitzgerald with Aristophanes and Shakespeare with Adam Smith while talking about money. The true definition of “interdisciplinary,” right?

Digital Skills in Food Media (FOOD-GE 2023) in Food Studies, Steinhardt

What: The course helps student assess the quality and development of food multimedia content. By use of practical experience, the class helps students understand how to use social media to your advantage, as well as write and edit content fit for food multimedia.

Why: Ever thought about becoming a food blogger? This class is for you! Enhance and curate your content and rise to the status of an influencer, all while making, writing, and photographing food.

Fame (MCC-UE- 1346) in Media, Culture, and Communication, Steinhardt

What: This MCC class delves into the desire to be recognized and immortalized that is a part of our world today. It investigates the premises that offer fame — from culture to politics to religion, and attempts to categorize fame into the good, bad, and ugly. Ultimately, it gets at the central questions of what is fame? Why do people want it? How do they get it? What can they do with it?

Why: Perhaps you’ve spent hours binging Keeping Up With The Kardashians and never quite understood why the show works or why you spend endless hours of your life addicted to it. If you’re interested in the celebrity culture that haunts the media today, this class might be an interesting pick for you! 

TwentySomething (CAMS-UA 146) in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies, CAS

What: This course marks an extensive exploration into the best years of our lives as college students — our twenties! From overspending on avocado toast to becoming the most successful entrepreneurs, it is all about navigating your way through the best and worst years of your life.

Why: If you’re suffering from a quarter-life crisis and looking for some insight, this course will truly make you feel “happy, free, confused, and lonely” at the same time!

Classic Mythology (CLASS-UA 404) in Department of Classics, CAS

What: Dive into the the mythological realm of Mount Olympus and discuss the myths and legends surrounding Greek and Roman gods and demigods. Not only does this course introduce you to some cool folklore, it also discusses it in context of mythographers like Freud and Strauss. 

Why: If you were ever a Percy Jackson fan, this course puts you right back into the world of Camp Half-Blood. You already know you want to take this class. 

Divergent Experiments: Roleplaying Games on the Margins from Dungeons to Do (GAMES-GT 402) at Game Center, Tisch (Brooklyn Campus)

Why: After the re-popularization of this game through Stranger Things, we think this class is a perfect fit for a fan that want’s to learn more about the games through a D&D lens!

What: Ever wondered why Dungeons & Dragons got so popular? This course aims to uncover just that! By discovering the workings of the game, the course sheds light on some of the earliest models of game design and references some ethical dilemmas faced in gaming even today.

The Science of Happiness (CAMS-UA 110) in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies, CAS

What: Also colloquially known as How to be Happy, this course helps you re-evaluate your beliefs, values, and assumptions by borrowing knowledge from the field of positive psychology. It also helps you understand the mental health and well-being of college students, from college level to later in life, on a personal and systems level. 

Why: If you’re a freshman and feeling a little lost at college, or an upperclassman feeling the pressure of having too much on your plate, take this class to focus on practices that can better help you frame happiness and make better decisions to thrive. Create your foundation for how to be happy on your own terms!
