“They were always puppies,” Kakashi insisted “just… different breeds.”
Recalling some of the ‘puppies’ he’d showed to Shikaku over the years he chuckled. There was so many different breeds around the village, he never seemed to run out of options.
Snake-puppies
Beetle-puppies from the Aburames (specifically Shibi who happily loaned Kakashi his biggest beetle to introduce to shikaku)
There was also the terrible spider-puppies, but Kakashi would leave the task of introducing those to Shikaku, to someone else.
“And kids, well,” his eyes drifted to the window, the too of the academy visible from his spot. “They’re still learning to be shinobi, but they’re actually getting a chance to take it slow and have a childhood. In fsct, the paperwork i was working on,” he jabbed a finger toward his desk “the elders are already up in arms over it. I’m raising the age for kids to graduate, and the age to become a jonin.”

"Sure... Different breeds.. different species, same same." Shikaku rolled his eyes as he recalled a few of the less favourable 'puppies' that had been dropped off to him in the past.
"The snakes weren't too bad.. At least the small ones weren't. But the skunk was just plain cruel. It took days to get the smell off me; and don't think I don't know that you bought all of the tomato juice from the stores."
Shikaku would never forget the little bastard running through his apartment and spraying everywhere. He shuddered at the memory. "I had to buy a new couch!"
"But changing the age sounds brilliant to me. There's far too much pressure on young minds that are still developing."
