Don’t Let Their Hate Trouble You!
PERSPECTIVE MATTERS...
18 If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of My name, because they do not know Him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both Me and My Father. 25 But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: 'They hated Me without a cause.'" ~ John 15:18-25
As I watched the horrific display of racial hatred play out in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday, I felt like I was caught in a time-warp from another era. Perhaps Hitler’s Nazi Germany, circa 1932. But perhaps an era a lot closer to home. To relive history’s most hateful hate-filled eras, we in America don’t have to leave our shores nor go back very far in time to witness some of the world’s worse acts of human incivility and atrocities ever perpetrated against other human beings.
The more than 400 years of recorded yet often overlooked aspects of American history, as both a colony and a nation, reveal the real hardcore truth concerning the gaping chasm between what the great abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass described as “the Christianity of this land and the Christianity of Christ.” Famously, Mr. Douglass wrote, "Between the Christianity of this land and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference." As a former slave, Douglass spoke as a moral authority who held the feet of the American conscious to the fire of Scriptural reality.
The history of human violence inflicted by man against his fellow man has a long and troubled history. The atrocities and death we saw broadcast across our television screens and mobile devices on Saturday, August 12th had its genesis ages ago. It was only in the second generation of human history that the murder of one brother by another would come to define the insatiable human appetite for violence and murder. A twisted envy and air of superiority was at the root of the first violent blood shed among brothers. That envy and error of superiority has only become more twisted through the ages as Satan has weaved his net to entrap an ever widening swath of humanity to grow increasingly insensitive to the taking of human life viewed of lesser value than its own through the medium history has incorrectly labeled "racism." The gospel truth of the matter is that there are no such thing as "races" among humanity. There is only one race: the human race. More on this in another post..
Hate has been around a mighty long time. It has a record that precedes itself. Every cemetery bares witness to hate’s demonic power and effectiveness. Hate has founded empires and nations. Hate has deposed kings and destroyed kingdoms. When you consider hate’s track record, it becomes easy to see why people would think that hate is winning and love is losing... badly. Cemeteries, prisons, our televisions and mobile media devices bare witness to the idea that hate seems to have the upper hand on love.
But I want to remind you of something today: Hate is on a short leash because its progenitor Satan is. Hate knows that its time is almost up because Satan’s time is almost up. It’s unfettered, terrifying reign on earth will soon come to a decisive end. This coming climax will be the result of Jesus having come down to earth the first time to be crucified and resurrected in order that we who once hated this Jesus and His Father could be reconciled back to the unbroken fellowship humanity once had with our Creator from the beginning of our time in time in that short-lived garden experience before sin imprisoned us into an existence that now can only try to imitate the life God had originally intended for mankind. His second coming back to earth will finally seal the deal He secured for us before closing the chapter on His first dispensation when He announced from the cross, "It is finished!" Remember, God is love, and since God has no beginning nor ending, neither does love. Love was on the scene from before our beginning began and it will last for eternity, well past the expiration date of this planet and the hate that has ruled it for so long. It won’t be long before hate is finished!
So when you encounter hate of various kinds, whether it be ethnic, religious, gender, etc., don't let their hate trouble you. Think of it this way, it is actually a privilege to be hated for no reason other than for the person that God Himself created you to be with His own mind and hands. The color of your skin and the gender of your person were all determined and ordained by God for a predetermined reason and purpose. To be hated only for who God made you is to literally walk in the very same sandals you would imagine much too big and holy for your feet. When you are hated for no other reason than being manufactured by God to look how you look, created in His image and likeness to fulfill His purposes on the earth, then you are being privileged to walk in the very shoes of Christ Himself. When you were created, God spoke to Himself and called you out of His own image and likeness. He spoke to Himself saying, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness” (Gen. 1:26).
Hatred is being directed at you because it is likewise being directed at Christ in you and out of Whom you came. So don't let their hate trouble you... Let the love and forgiveness of Christ dwelling in you and demonstrated through you trouble them! Perspective Matters...
