Cat Hats
As we learned before, Josiah Lockwood was the local hatter. The back of the 1797 blotter lists skins that Boardman delivered to him, including cat, rabbit, and muskrat. While entertaining, google results for “Cat hat” are less than helpful. Can a costume/textile expert explain what a hatter would have done with three cat pelts, and what kind of cat it might have been. Would a hatter use fur from a domestic cat? Is this a bobcat, fisher cat, mountain lion? Maybe the next volume will provide more details.
