Hattingley Vineyard, Alresford, Hampshire. I was invited with work to the opening of the new Hattingly vineyard near Alresford for their trade opening launch. After a bit of a drive into the middle of nowhere we eventually found the sight which consists of a handful of nicely designed farm/warehouse buildings and a nice annex/tasting building. In here we had a presentation about the development of the company etc and a bit about the wines. Emma Rice is the wine maker - she has worked in NZ, Australia and California previously so has lots of experience and really knows her stuff. Surrounding her are lots of young enthusiastic employees who help her run the vineyard. They give the place a really nice vibe. We next had a tour of the vineyards which are very pretty and well kept. The tour was conducted by a young Frenchman trained in the wine trade in Toulouse. They grow Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunière and a few other experimental varieties. The focus is on the sparkling varieties that make up the classic Champagne blend. We then headed for a tasting of all the wines they've made so far in the winery - after a brief tour of this high tech sparkling clean facility filled with funny wine pun posters - where we tried two vintages of the Classic Cuvée, the Blanc de Blanc and the King's Cuvée too. The Rosé is still in progress as originally they weren't planning on making one but everyone needs a bit of rosé! So, though its been made, the rosé wasn't ready to try. All the wines were divine and give Nyetimber a run for its money. The King's Cuvée was my favourite of course...expensive taste. This would retail at about £75 if on sale but it sounds like not enough was made to put it out on general sale which is a shame! I doubt we'll see any of this one in the near future. The classic cuvée retails at £29.95 generally and is well worth it in my opinion! And a trip to this lovely vineyard and winery is must if you can get over there. Overall Hattingley Valley is a gorgeous place with great staff making delicious wines. I can't wait to get them on the shelves of my shop!
