I saw the post of the yellowjackets, can i ask why sugar water isnt good for bees and wasps? I sometimes give it to bees or wasps that are dehydrated or worn out to try and help them, but i want to make sure im doing the correct thing when helpung them
While it’s not really harmful for one bee or wasp to drink sugar water one time, I don’t like to encourage it - problems arise when people are leaving sugar water out for them all the time or a whole bunch of people are feeding sugar water left and right to bees and wasps.
Refined sugar is just empty carbohydrates and it’s not useful for them or for their larvae like nectar from a flower would be. Nectar and pollen have amino acids, protein, and other vitamins that they need. If you leave sugar water out, the bees see it as an easy food source, and they’ll bring all their friends to feast on the mostly-useless snack instead of looking for a natural food source. It’s especially bad for honeybees since they can’t make useful honey if all they’re fed is sugar water.
Not to mention if they’re not looking for nectar and pollen, then they’re not doing their job as very important pollinators! PLUS some sugar substitutes are very effective insecticides and will kill them.
I would recommend, if you find a tired bee or wasp you want to help, either offer it plain water OR bring it to a nice flower for a sippy sip.

ive been watching the keb community for a while and i really want one. ive actually thought about it a lot but from what i see in the community, no one really reaches out and make connections and it makes me sort of uncomfortable because i want to make friends in the community. not just be someone who just sits in silence... and the only time i interact is when hakuet has a stream.
