Tucker? at Tuckers Grave - Faulkland - Somerset

Tucker's Grave , Faulkland, Somerset Tuckers Grave is a traditional cider house and is the oldest in Somerset, its is steeped in history and has been serving the local area for 200 years. It has no bar and is relatively unchanged since WW1 with original Georgian features. It was built in the mid 17th Century near the burial site of a local farm worker Edward Tucker who, on 5th June 1747 hung himself in a barn a few miles away. At that time suicides were not permitted to be buried on hallowed ground but were to be buried in unmarked graves usually at a cross roads, supposedly so the soul would be confused and not find its way to Heaven. These lonely and unhallowed graves all too easily became the focus of local fears and rumours There are reports that his ghostly figure ,has been seen by witnesses around the area of the public house. I used to drive this road every night at one time when I lived near Faulkland, but never saw anything.

Bath's Haunted Pubs Bath has many, very old pubs, like most towns & cities. A lot of them were old coaching inns too. This is a list of the reported haunted ones.. Do you know of any others that can be added to the list? The three most famous haunted pubs are The Garricks Head, next to the Theatre Royal, The Saracens Head, Broad Street and The Crystal Palace, Abbey Green. As well as The Westgate, Bath Tap. The Raven (Hatchetts) The Salamander, The Beehive - Belvedere & The Curfew in the city centre. Further out of the city you have The White Hart - Widcombe, Ye Old Farmhouse, The Devonshire Arms, The Crown & Anchor Weston, The Star Inn, Vineyards and the Crown Inn, Bathwick Most of the above have a separate posts on the page detailing the hauntings and history..

Hatchetts/The Raven - Queen Street - Bath

History - The land where the pub sits was originally farmland and was part of Bartons Farm. The earliest showing of the site is 1735, which shows it as a garden, the pub was then built on top of what was a garden wall. It was also called John Street at that point. During the second world war, pilots based at a nearby airfield used to frequent the pub and had left messages on the walls upstairs, these were sadly painted over in the 60's You can read a full and comprehensive history on the pubs website- link in comments. Hauntings - There is said to be the ghost of a grey lady said to haunt the cellar and legend says that a previous owner was said to have murdered his wife with an axe, hence the name Hatchetts... But I havent found any newspapers to substantiate this as yet.. A more common theory is that in the Regency period there was a popular drinking club in Picadilly, London named after its landlord where the Bath stage coaches would leave. Poltergeist activity is reported from banging doors to falling and breaking glasses. There is also an old well in the cellar where a young boy was said to have drowned and his ghost is said to have been felt or seen in there..

The George - Bathampton The George Inn sits on the banks of the Kennet and Avon Canal in Mill Lane, Bathampton, opposite St. Nicholas Church. There is some debate as to when exactly the inn was built. Some sections seem to have been established as early as the 12th century, when it was part of a monastery for the Prior of Bath. Though according to English Heritage, the current building is built from ‘coursed rubble with a Cotswold stone slate roof’ and dates from the mid to late 17th century, while the west gable is dated 1815. The George Inn is said to be haunted by the ghost of Viscount John Baptiste Du Barre, a foreign noble, who died in the last legal duel fought in Britain. A decadent man who held lavish parties, he was also fond of gambling. Following a quarrel over a game of cards, a challenge was thrown down and he and his opponent met on Claverton Down at dawn on 18th November 1778. Haunted Pubs - The George - Norton St Philip

The Inn was built in the 13th or 14th century and was originally a wool store for Hinton Priory at Hinton Charterhouse, the next village and also accommodated travellers and merchants coming to the annual wool fairs that were held in the village from the late 13th century until 1902 Someone I know used to work at the pub in the 90's and thought there was a tunnel between the pub and the Priory.. but this could just be rumour.. The pub later became part of the stage coach route between London and South West England. On 12 June 1668 Samuel Pepys, with his wife and servants, passed through Norton St Philip on their way to Bath from Salisbury. The Inn was earlier used as the headquarters of Monmouth's army, during the Monmouth Rebellion (Pitchfork Rebellion) of June and July of 1685, after his retreat from Bath. The Duke, who was the illegitimate son of Charles II, led a ragtag army of 8,000 locals armed with muskets, scythes and pitchforks against a professional army of his uncle James II. Legend says that the Duke was in his room shaving and was narrowly missed by a bullet shot from outside, which he managed to dodge, and it lodged in the wall, its unknown whether there is actual physical evidence left of this. A bloody battle took place in a field just a stones throw away from the pub at Bloody Lane (Chevers Lane) so called as the hill or lane at the time ran with blood after the battle. In the aftermath of the failed rebellion Judge Jefferies used the George Inn as a courtroom and conducted 12 executions on the village common, as part of the Bloody Assizes. Judge Jefferies and the Duke are possibly reputed to haunt the pub, Dogs have been reported to react aggressively towards something unseen in the bar areas, and the atmosphere is said to change at times. Considering this is one of the oldest pubs in England and is relatively unchanged over its lifetime, its must have its fair share of spirits, maybe more residual than intelligent.. A beautiful and haunting photo of Bath from the 1800's showing that in the days of early cameras, motion blur was a common thing in photographs, giving a wonderful ghost like feel to the images of the children.

On this same street is the building dating back to 1700's which is now home to The Raven pub, formerly Hatchetts..

The George and Pilgrim Pub , Glastonbury Located in the centre of Glastonbury, the first recording of the building was in 1439 Originally the Pilgrims' Inn, it was a hospice of the Abbey. It is claimed to be the oldest purpose built public house in the South West of England. George and Pilgrim still boasts an abundance of original features including old oak beams, mullion windows and panelled stone frontage. It is reputed to be haunted by several spirits including one who is said to be a monk who has been spotted wandering the dark corridors of the hotel in the early hours of the morning, with the floorboards creaking under his feet. The other is said to be an elegant lady who follows him on occasion with a look of yearning on her face! Two of ghosts are referred to by Guy Lyon Playfair in ‘The Haunted Pub Guide’ (1985), ‘One, not surprisingly, is a monk. Early in the 1970s a woman guest described him in unusual detail, having seen him for what she reckoned to be ten to fifteen minutes……At one point the monk sat down on the guest’s bed, and she felt the sheets and blankets tighten over her as he did so. He was not alone; hovering in the background were two indistinct shapes that remained in a sort of vapour. A visiting medium claims that the pair were in fact lovers, but due to the monk having taken a vow of celibacy their love remained unconsummated and they have forever been doomed to stay there bound to Earth because of this! It is reported that her ghostly likeness was photographed by a customer.. See pic in comments..
