Character Introduction: Mia Gottfried

Background Story

Note: this background story contains elements of heavy depression, death, sexual favors, hatred, manipulation and it's fairly long.

Mia was 15 when she met Frank for the first time at high school, she was a cheerleader, and he was utterly popular, a football player, they instantly fell in love, they were the perfect couple that everyone envied and adored, they were inseparable, a true relationship goals, they weren't only lovers but also best friends, they had an understanding on a different level.

One thing led to another and Mia found herself pregnant at 17, she wanted to abort the child, she almost did, but Frank found out about her plan and stopped her, he begged her to let the child live, he told her that he would raise him himself and she wouldn't have to be involved if she didn't want to, she decided to keep the baby.

Mia's pregnancy was quite difficult, she felt awful most of the time, constantly throwing up, visiting hospital on regular bases, she hated every second of it, and what made things worse is that her parents decided to kick her out for being pregnant out of wedlock, she had to move in with Frank and his family, they lived in his small room, and she hated it, shortly after that, they moved into Frank parents' attic, Frank had made it livable, it was larger and definitely looked better but still, she always felt cramped.

When she due, she was rushed to the hospital with excruciating pain, she had to go through a c-section and almost died in the birthing process, making her dislike motherhood even further.

When she returned home, she was unable to leave the bed for two months due to postpartum depression, she barely held her son, Klaus was mostly cared for by Frank and Frank's parents during that time, mostly Frank's parents since Frank was cramping three jobs, trying to save up to get a proper apartment and finish his education, he wanted to give his little family a worthy life.

After a year and a half, Frank and Mia got married, Frank was also able to get the family out of the attic and into a small, two bedroom apartment, he was mostly taking care of Klaus as Mia's depression kept coming and going, there would be times when she was unable to lift a finger, those were the hardest for both of them, especially since Frank couldn't stay home with her and take care of her, he had to study, work and take care of baby Klaus.

After finishing his bachelor degree, Frank landed a job that made them a good living, he would buy Mia the fanciest things he could, it made her happy, even if temporarily, so he had to work more in order to afford the things that would make his wife smile, he even offered her to return to school when Klaus was four but she refused, saying she wouldn't be able to enjoy the experience or relate to the younger generations of students, deciding to dedicate her time to her family instead and being a stay at home wife.

She was a good mother regardless of her never bonding or having a connection with Klaus, she made sure he was well fed, clean, rested, protected, academically accomplished, she put the time and effort to give him a normal childhood even if the two of them felt like walking on egg shelves with around one another, something that she noticed never happened with Klaus and Frank, it made her resent the situation even further.

When Klaus was five, Frank admitted to Mia that he cheated on her a couple of times with men, he admitted to her that he is gay, and that he suspected it back in high-school, that's why he insisted on having Klaus, knowing that Mia is the only woman he's comfortable enough to be sexually vulnerable around, and that Klaus might be his only chance at being a father.

Mia felt angry, she felt like she missed so many opportunities in life because of Frank's cowardliness, that she was trapped in a life that she hated because of him, however, she also felt relieved, his confession was the perfect excuse for her to be free, she forgave her husband but also asked for divorce which Frank completely understood, she kept the apartment, and they agreed that Klaus would move in with Frank and she would have him every other weekend, they also agreed that Klaus would stay with her for a couple of months until Frank figures a few things out.

By the time Frank was able to take Klaus and carry on with their agreement, Klaus was estranged from his father, he was clinging more to Mia, even though it was an inconvenience since Mia was building a life without him, she was already dating a new man, spending nights out, so they came up with a plan, a bonding trip for Klaus and Frank so they can reconnect.

Once Frank and Klaus travelled to the USA, Mia and her boyfriend at the time, Eike, went on a cruise, they were mid-cruise when the apocalypse happened, but they managed to land on the shores of the United States unharmed.

Eike and Mia found a safe community and lived there for a couple of years, they even got married and she was the happiest, so in love, always smiling, feeling protected and safe, the apocalypse felt like a paradise to her, until one day, a group of four raided that community and killed everyone, they murdered Eike in front of her, she sobbed but she also bargained with the group to let her live, and if Mia was one thing, she was convincing and sneaky.

Mia managed to develop a relationship with the leader of the group, John Fisher, it was beneficial, she gave him sex and he kept her alive, he was a menace, abusive and generally awful to her, eventually, John got her pregnant and when that happened, she became indispensable, she became part of the group, a person with a say in different matters.

Nine months later, she gave birth to her son, Arthur Fisher, Arther's birth was nothing like Klaus's, it was easy, it was painless, and she immediately felt a bond with him, he gave her a reason to live, and became the reason for her to smile, even John started treating her better when he saw Arthur, and that man was many things but a sympathetic, gentleman was not one of them, Arthur brought the best in him.

When her son was five, John heard about a place called The Haven, he wanted to raid it for supplies, the group would scout the heavily guarded building and try to seek weak points, only this place wasn't like the community where she lived with Eike, their snooping didn't go unnoticed, as they suddenly found themselves surrounded by the guards and held down at a gunpoint.

She learned about the two men who were in charge, Troy and Dwight, Troy was the one who issued for the group to be killed, the guards immediately obeyed without question, while Dwight pleaded for Mia's life since she's a mother and had a five years old with her, Troy eventually caved in and allowed her and her son into the Haven as long as she makes herself useful, and she did, she started working at the laundry unite and help around, earning her keep, her life was going well, until...
