“Mm.” The Doctor didn’t so much as glance up at him. Was he embarrassed? Guilty, at not having said anything, or flustered at being caught in a lie of omission? Or did he just not think it was important enough to look up for? “I had a letter, this morning, inviting me to a gathering of wizards. They don’t usually give too much notice – they’re awfully self-important, that way – so I’ll have to be setting off soon.” Huffing to himself, he unwound a strip of willow, setting it in place a touch more forcefully. “I, ah – I thought I’d best make a start on this as soon as possible.” He had seen the letter, Jamie realised, barely an hour ago. He hadn’t seen it arrive – but it had clearly been a letter, and he’d wondered how the Doctor got any correspondence at all, so far into the forest. No post-chaise could find its way through the trees, surely. But there it had been, and the Doctor had been quiet all through breakfast, working steadily through his toast with a furrow carved between his brows. Jamie had glanced at it over his shoulder surreptitiously, but to no avail. Even if he’d known his letters, he wouldn’t have been able to make heads nor tails of the funny curling glyphs that sprawled across the paper.
another little snippet of the wizard au for you because I know you've been keeping up with it!!! <3
this is fairly. spoiler-y ig for the crux of the fic, which is the doctor leaving and jamie wondering where that's going to leave him. but also in this bit you get a tiny snippet of the historical grounding of the series (post-chaise is apparently the word for the carriages which carried post around the 18th century), which has been. surprisingly difficult to work in given the fairly restrictive setting/pool of characters so far? & also a mention of jamie not being able to read, which will be both fluff and plot-relevant later >:)
wip ask game!
