Hawk Rock is located deep in the woods of the New York watershed in Putnam County, N.Y. and is perhaps one of the most mystical places and best-kept secrets in North America. Some local residents claim that the carvings were done by Boy Scouts decades ago; however, a Native American shaman I talked with indicated that the symbols have been there for as long as any of his people can remember and finds it very funny that those who are not descendants of the tribes in New York continue to take credit for all the amazing things their Native American ancestors did. During his life, I made many visits to see Charlie and learned the locations of sacred ground, which were once kept secret by the Native Americans of New York. Charlie told me that Hawk Rock is not the only sacred object found in that watershed area, and that it is also the location of burial grounds of an ancient people and the home of a Trickster. The Algonquian people believe that the Trickster is a creator, destroyer, giver and taker and will always try to trick unsuspecting human beings just to have fun with them. Perhaps Charlie is correct in indicating that the aliens and hooded beings, as well as the strange sounds, animals and UFOs seen at Hawk Rock, are nothing more than the Trickster scaring people off his land and having fun doing it.
