probably leslie and ann from parks and rec and it could go either way sometimes, but ashley’s definitely more the leslie and i’m more the ann for the most part. and even though they’re not a fictional duo i immediately thought of this scene from WORLD RENOWNED bravo reality tv show southern charm where shep and craig are going to confront their friend austen abt his girlfriend cheating on him and shep is taking charge like ‘ok so we’re gonna talk abt xyz and say abc’ etc. etc. acting like he’s gonna handle the whole thing?? but then when their friend sits down shep is like ‘……….craig..tell austen the information that u have please……..’ and craig’s like smdh 🤦🏻‍♂️ and shep just chimes in w stuff like ‘…this brings us no joy….it’s bc we love you….’ while craig has to do the dirty work and she is LITERALLY shep while i am the the craig smh.

I will caveat that I haven’t watched 1995 in years but I also don’t want to, lmao.

1. Hysterical but unfunny women

One of the best things about Austen and P&P is how funny the text is. These characters are absurd and they say ridiculous things, but it’s not exactly obvious slap-stick humor. You have to be immersed in it to get it (take that! my entire 10th grade class, you didn’t try hard enough).

So the characterizations of Mrs. Bennet and, to a lesser extent, Kitty & Lady Catherine are actually offensive to me. They’re all played into these extreme caricatures that eliminate all nuance in their stories. If the series could navigate the ridiculousness of Mr. Collins with ease, how could they not allow the same for Mrs. Bennet? They stomped all over her with shrillness and gave her no room to be a person!

2. Loyalty over feeling

It’s too long. They had too much time so they filled it by being extremely accurate to the books to the point of being boring. The books require so much detail to immerse the reader into the story. So when you move to a visual medium, YOU DON’T NEED THAT MUCH TIME.

They overdo it with loyalty to the book and forget to find ways to bring it down to earth. It robs the series of the feelings that build within the text, which leads me to...

3. the lake scene is absurd.

i’ve seen text posts ripping into the US version end scene of 2005 because american audiences needed a kiss, but GUESS WHAT. That’s better than turning this into a paperback bodice ripper FOR THE VIEWS. way to jump genres, you edgelords.

4. styling jane

i mean i have some questions about the casting here (i don’t want to be mean), but why did they have to do that actress so dirty and make her look ridiculous? surely you could’ve found a different period appropriate hairstyle that was more flattering. it completely took me out of it because everyone’s like “THE BEAUTY OF THE COUNTY” and i’m like “what.”

ok those are the main points but i will say that i do love jennifer ehle and colin firth. they are absolutely the team that keeps this version together and if you isolate them, it’s a really great series.

bubble bath: do you have any routines before bedtime? like skin care, etc. what are they? i could be on my deathbed and i would still brush my teeth and at the very least wash and moisturize my face. then bleu gets her bedtime treat and i get in bed and usually scroll thru insta and tumblr one last time then either hit the sack or read for a bit! that’s what i try to do, at least...sometimes i end up watching three episodes of the office until i fall asleep and then regret it in the morning but, yk. it’s what it’s.
