Y/N: ...
Alastor: [With mock offense, hand to his chest] My dear, are you truly choosing solitude over my scintillating company? Well! I never!
Y/N: Sorry, I just... [Your voice falters. You hesitate, unsure if you can trust him with your vulnerability] I have a... problem.
Alastor: [One brow arches as a sharp-toothed grin spreads slowly across his face] A singular problem? How quaint! I'd wager most people carry a whole parade of them. How delightfully optimistic of you to stop at one!
Y/N: [You try to laugh, but it breaks in your throat. This morning flashes before your eyes, your confrontation, your courage, and then the sharp, biting words] One of the new hotel guests... the one that was bothering Charlie...they said I was ugly. That... that I was...unlovable. They said I’d never amount to anything. I—I tried to ignore it, really, I did... but... I’m just so tired of pretending it doesn’t hurt.
Your tears fall freely now, hot with shame and frustration. You bow your head, trying to make yourself small. You wish you were tougher. You wish their words hadn’t gotten to you.
Alastor: [The room falls eerily quiet. His usual crackling mirth is... still. He’s watching. Not mocking. Not Laughing. Watching]
Y/N: [Sniffling, you rub at your eyes and force a weak chuckle] Gosh, this is ridiculous. I know it’s childish. I mean, why would I care what someone like them thinks, right? Still, um... thanks for not making fun of me. I know that’s usually your thing.
Alastor: ...
The silence is unnerving. His smile has returned, but it’s different now. Tighter. Colder. Still pleasant. Still polite. But not warm.
Y/N: [You breathe in deep, square your shoulders, and force a bright, shaky smile] Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me! Right, Alastor?
Alastor: [Voice silken, with the smoothness of a blade being unsheathed] Excuse me for just one moment, my dear.
-----THE NEXT DAY-----
Husk: [Wiping a cup with a dirty cloth, muttering under his breath] That guest? Gone. "Evicted," he said. Said they were causing a singular problem.
You never saw them again. No one asked questions. And though Alastor smiled the same as always, you swore, just for a moment, his shadow smiled back, teeth glinting.
