headcanon - Roy’s sisters

Madame Christmas has employed many young women while she’s owned her bar. Said bar was, and still is, a safe haven for women who didn’t have anywhere else to go. Most of them came from Central while others moved to the city from other parts of Amestris.

Note from Kai: This is not a complete list of every person ever employed at the bar, and I will probably add more over time. But, these are the ones Roy grew up around the most.

Allison: Born in South City, and she still has the accent to prove it. She is the one who taught Roy how to braid hair since she always had it long. Faceclaim: Jurnee Smollett

Amelia: Born in Southern Amestris with her two sisters, Aurora and Maria, but later moved to Central when Aurora transferred. She and Roy are thick as thieves, and they knew each other well before he met Aurora, the new State Alchemist under his wing. One of Madame Christmas’s top performers. Written by: @galeleads

Carrie: Born in Dublith, and she moved to Central later in life. Between her and Allison, who had a mini-rivalry going, Roy learned much of southern Amestris’s dialect. Faceclaim: Nadia Hilker

Catherine: Born in Central, and she moved to East City later, she was Roy’s main contact while he was stationed there. She served in Ishval slightly before him, leaving due to the loss of her left arm. As of now, she’s had automail for several years. She is the one who taught him self-defense while in Central, and she’ll still spar with him when he visits. One can find her still working at Eastern Command with newer recruits. Emma: Born and raised in Central. When Roy was a teenager, she was one of the girls who taught him how to dance. He was also one of the only ones who could make her laugh on a consistent basis. Faceclaim: Maisie Williams

Jessie: Born in Wellesley, but moved to Central with her family when she was in her teens. She plans to pursue a career in singing once she has the funds for it. Lillian: Born in Central, but left to serve in the southern border wars while Roy was still in school. She was sent home after losing her hearing while in combat. When she got back, she started learning sign language. Ever curious, and wanting to help, Roy learned alongside her. In fact, most of Roy’s sisters and Madam Christmas learned. Madeline: Born in North City to a wealthy family, Madeline moved to Central some time during her teen years after a falling out with her family. It is not something she likes to talk about, and Chris never pried after taking her in. Her background with the upper class helps with clientele of similar status, especially with the difference in dialects and societal functions. Chris had hear teaching the other girls to make them aware. Faceclaim: Kat McNamara

Vanessa: Born and raised in Central. She’s only two or three years younger than Roy, and the two of them got in trouble together a lot during their teenage years. Maes Hughes reminded him of Vanessa a lot, especially since she loved taking candid photos in the bar. She also tended to be the one who teased him the most. Faceclaim: Lindsey Morgan

How I Write Ienzo/Zexion

These may or may not be unique to my portrayal. Since I’m sort of back, I thought I’d make a post that lays things out in one place.

I write them as agender using they/them pronouns. Whether or not your character knows this is up to you. More information on how they express their gender can be found here.

They are of Russian descent. Both of their parents were Russian, and came from another world. Ienzo, however, was born in Radiant Garden. Their complete history can be found on their about page.

Their parents died in a house fire when they were eight years old. They were in that fire as well, but survived. A timeline for events that occurred in their life can be found here. 

Due to the fire, they live with PTSD. They are terrified of fire. They won’t use Fire spells, and they won’t go near fire. With their PTSD comes survivor’s guilt, which I wrote a bit about here.

They are demisexual and aromantic. They are also open to polyamory provided they built up enough trust with all parties involved.

They are able to manipulate shadows. I wrote up an explanation of how that works here. Their fighting style can also be found here.

Morally, even after they regained their heart, they are in a grey area. I wrote about how they think in that regard here.

headcanon - flame alchemy research

As noted in canon, Berthold Hawkeye did not keep any paper records of his flame alchemy research. Roy, on the other hand, does keep physical, paper records. His alchemy journal is on his person at all times when awake and under lock and key when asleep. As he’s been practicing this particular alchemy for years, he’s gone through more than one journal, which are also under lock and key. The only other person who has a key to where he keeps his journals is Riza Hawkeye.

In the journal itself, Roy does what all noteworthy alchemists do: he codes it. For one, he doesn’t use Amestrian as a language base, but common Cretan, which he is fluent in. Based off that, his code is a variant of the Vigenère cipher, and he keeps the key for it separate from the journals themselves. Again, Riza is the only other person who has access to that key. As for units he uses, he generally sticks with the metric system and Celsius when noting temperature. He can automatically translate such units to the imperial system, a skill he gained before he learned alchemy.

Should anyone get their hands on his research journal, and Roy perceives them as an enemy, he’ll burn it without hesitation. It’ll piss him off to do so, but he will always err on the side of extreme caution when it comes to flame alchemy.

headcanon - dance

Part of Roy’s unconventional upbringing included knowing how to dance. Per his aunt, it was another weapon to have in his arsenal. Not only that, but several of his “sisters” knew how to dance, and he found it fun. He primarily knows three types:

1. Waltz: this was the first type he learned as it’s common in formal settings. “You need to look and act like you belong there,” were his aunt’s instructions.

2. Swing: as it’s rather common in Amestris, particularly at less formal gatherings, he made sure he knew how.

3. Tango: if he’s being honest, he learned how to tango purely to show off. His sisters may have influenced this decision as well. “Swing is fun, but the tango is romantic.” And, of course, Roy’s a romantic at heart.

Kai’s Headcanon Post | Always accepting.

1. Roy does know how to swim. He just doesn’t enjoy it that much, and would much prefer lounging around in a beach chair.

2. One part of military life that Roy struggled with, especially once he was a Major, was being called sir. His aunt called him by his first name, boy if she was irritated or trying to get his attention, or a combination of those two as a nickname. The women he considers his sisters called him by first name only. Outside of that, he was used to Mr. Mustang or just his last name.

3. He studied every language possible while at the academy. Aerugonian, however, is the one he became most fluent in. While he doesn’t remember a good chunk of it, he can still carry on a decent conversation in Aerugonian if needed.

Roy will not sing around others unless he is either in a wonderful mood, or if he likes the one person he’s around at the time. His vocal range tends to be a low tenor to baritone (something close to this). The types of songs he tends to sing? Mostly jazz and blues music, but he’ll switch it up depending on his mood. Sometimes, he’ll even sing in Aerugonian (Italian for a nonfictional reference).

Something of note regarding Roy’s use of alchemy: he generally only uses one hand when producing flames.

As mentioned in the post regarding excessive force, Roy is very careful when he uses his alchemy. He generally only uses his right hand to produce flames, but switches to his left if necessary. He’ll sometimes wear both gloves as a general precaution, and always has at least one backup pair with him should something happen.

The only reason he’ll use both hands when attacking is if the enemy in front of him requires it, and he doesn’t have to worry about the safety of those around him. Or, he has to be beyond the point of caring where logic can’t follow.

headcanon - Soft Sunday #1

If you’re a person who is easily cold, or otherwise struggles to stay warm, just sit next to Roy. He always tends to run warm, and he’s more than happy to act as your personal space heater if he likes you. Should he not like you, he’ll make it clear he doesn’t want you invading his personal space.

One neat trick he can do with his alchemy, and it took him a while to master it, is he can warm his hands without creating fire. The calculations required are different, and he has to concentrate more to make it work, but it’s worth it during the colder months.
