The last and the fourth kind of flower arrangement in Ikebana is the Contemporary Ikebana. The concept and style of classic flower arrangements – such as Rikka and Seika – continue to be fundamental, but modern tastes have led to the use of a variety of materials not previously used in Ikebana. If plant materials were not used, this arrangement could be considered a contemporary sculpture. Floral designers are reviving the ancient Japanese art — and with it, an appreciation for the life force of a flower. According to one of Japan’s most influential modern ikebana practitioners, the reclusive 69-year-old artist Toshiro Kawase, that is precisely the point: to see that “the whole universe is contained within a single flower” — for one small thing to open our minds to so much more.
