It wasn’t often that Julia was able to find the time to take a few consecutive days off of work, but when the opportunity arose, she grabbed it by the reins. It was important to her that she had time to visit the islands and spend time with her mother - enough time. One to two days wasn’t nearly enough for the blonde. She needed at least two to three days with her mother, then another two for her animals, then a minimum of one day to talk with the others that lived it. It was all calculated down to the second.

This trip was just a tiny bit different, however. Not by much, but this time she was able to get Vaughn to agree to take the trip with her. A rare occasion! Although, when it came to Mirabelle asking personally, everyone had a hard time saying no. She was not only a mom to Julia, but Julia felt that she was like one to Vaughn as well. Maybe a few others on the islands, too. 

The trip back felt longer than usual, but that easily could have been due to her excitement about finally being able to go home. She made small talk with Vaughn on the way, knowing his limits very well and knowing that she’d be doing most of the talking.

“We’re home~!”

Stepping off the boat, Julia spun in a circle with her arms in the air. There was no better feeling than this crisp, clean air of their hometown.

Spooks & Hot Chocolate | Ceci & Vaughn

       Cecilia sat in her usual spot at the table, legs stretched out trying to relieve some of the soreness of a long day, and books spread out as she tried to focus on finishing a lab. There was still plenty of time for her to do it, she just wanted to get it out of the way now while she could. Every so often, she’d look up, searching to make sure she hasn’t been left alone. As much as she loves Vaughn’s animals, she doesn’t think she’d ever treat them with the same amount of love and self-confidence he possessed. 

       Her phone sat on the table, occasionally buzzing as friends from school and work messaged her. It was after checking on the messages from a friend at school that she started smiling. Her gaze rose from textbook to Vaughn, and her smile widened. She’d been wanting to go out and do something while the weather was still mostly nice, and her friend had given her the perfect idea. “Vaughn? Would you ever be willing to do a hayride with me?”

Passing Time || Vaughn & Elliott

With the sun beginning to set and Elliott only just having arrived home from work, he let out a heavy sigh and shrugged off his jacket, hanging it up in the coat closet to be worn the next day. He and Julia were still in that awkward stage where they didn’t know each other’s schedules nor each other all that well, and though Elliott considered how kind it might be to cook her dinner while he was also cooking for himself, he had no idea what her interests were.

Perhaps it would be more wise to go with a general favorite world over: pasta.

Elliott set water to boiling and salted it liberally, then pulled out a box of spaghetti noodles as he waited. A knock came at the door, and he blinked, padding to it in his sockfeet, head tilted to the side. As he opened the door, he saw a handsome but unique man standing outside in a regrettable amount of layers for the summer, and he flashed him a warm smile immediately. “Hello there, how can I help you?”

Guardian Angel || Vaughn & Penny

On rare evenings, Penny came into the salon late, then stayed over a few hours past closing to complete several administrative tasks and restocking the shelves of product. It was a more thorough deep inventory than her usual side work, but she almost preferred it. It gave her the opportunity to make sure that every item on the shelf was perfectly in place. That every part of the front desk was organized. Everything in its place. That was her favorite.

On most of those nights, she felt safe walking to her car, but there had been recent reports of a robbery near the lot where she normally parked - across the street at The Roast, out of habit, than in their parking garage - and it unnerved her to think of walking to her car. She knew they had access to the security personnel in the building for these exact occasions, but...

It took ten minutes of amping herself up before she finally made the call to Baycourt Security to request someone to walk her to her car, and she already regretted being an inconvenience before she hung up the phone. Still, she gathered her belongings, locked up the office, and waited outside in the hallway, her head down, waiting.

What Are You Doing Here?! | Ceci & Vaughn

       She’d finally finished unpacking the last of her boxes. Several months into moving in and she was finally done setting everything up the way she wanted it. Originally she had planned on doing it sooner, but every time she had set aside time to do it something had come up. Besides, it wasn’t like she was home all that often. Work, school, and what little social life she had kept her busy. 

       And if she was being honest coming home to an empty apartment sometimes made her feel lonely. 

       Arms wrapped around a box of clothing she wanted to donate, she pushed her front door shut with one hip. Holding the box against the wall to balance it, she dug into her pocket looking for her keys. The lock to her apartment had a bad habit of stick and today was no different. Muttering under her breath as she struggled, she tried not to let herself get too frustrated.

       Finally the door locked, but the key refused to come loose.  “ Oh come on! “ Frowning, Ceci set the box down on the floor, she tried using both hands to try and get the key unstuck.  “ Work you stupid thing! “

Someone Has To Do It || Vaughn & Basil

The absolute audacity of people who would litter on hiking trails blew Basil’s cotton picking mind.

Every other morning, Basil got up early to walk one of the trails, and every other morning, he found garbage at least twice along the trail itself. It infuriated him. These were objects that could often be recycled, not just left to rot or choke animals or inhibit plants. Even things that people thought were safe to dispose of - like an apple core - was capable of choking an animal.

On this morning in particular, Basil brought a bag with him - cloth, of course, reusable - to gather the garbage he found laying around. He was so deep in tunnel vision that when he leaned down to pick up a plastic bottle, he almost ran into someone reaching for the same thing.

“Oh! Excuse me!” He paused. “...was that yours?”

Rescue Mission || Vaughn & Candace

“No!!”

Candace had...had never seen an accident happen before, but maybe she should have expected it in the middle of a big city. One moment, she was waiting to cross the street. The next, halfway down the quiet sidewalk there was a whimpering dog - a mutt, from the looks of it - limping and dragging one of its back legs.

Tears came immediately unbidden to her eyes. She hurried over, and when the dog looked up at her with mournful eyes...it began to thump its tail on the ground. It was friendly! Even after being clipped by that car... “Oh...” Candace sank down to her knees beside it, letting it sniff her hand, too focused on comforting it before she could even think to get it help.
