“White Flag” de Dido: Una balada nacida del desamor que se convirtió en el himno que conquistó los charts.

This week’s set of songs:
“Maria Ninguém”: This bossa nova song was originally written by Brazilian songwriters Carlos Lyra and Carlos Coutinho in 1956, but it became famous thanks to João Gilberto’s version, that was published in his 1959 album, “Chega de Saudade”. It’s a beautiful song about this “Maria” girl, who is so unique that she doesn’t even have a surname, she’s literally called “No one Mary”. Every time I listen to this cheerful and relaxed song I get in such a nice mood!

“Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”: It was composed by Bob Dylan in 1962 and published in 1963 in “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”, one of his first original albums, that led him to become a legend of folk and country. It’s a classic folk song, with lots of pain and sorrow about a lost love: it talks about relationships that didn’t go quite as planned, about hard goodbyes and the difficulties of ending a love story. The singer is profoundly harmed, but, as the title says, he doesn’t want to blame anyone for anything, and so he doesn’t think twice about what could have been: he accepts the truth, and moves on. This is one of my favourite Bob Dylan’s songs: it brings me lots of peace of mind (which I need, a lot), and reminds me that I shouldn’t torture myself by reliving every mistake I’ve ever made. I’m allowed to just not think twice, because it’s all right.

“Vltava”: This is a classical symphonic, composed by the Czech writer Smetana in 1874. It’s part of a set of symphonic poems called “Má Vlast”, which means “My home”. Each of them describes a different part of Bohemia, Smetana’s region of origin in the Czech Republic. The Vltava is the longest river in the Czech Republic, and this poem describes its course in a very singular and magic way. The original version is played by a whole orchestra, but I personally prefer this amazing harp version by French musician Valérie Milot. I listen to this when I need to get “inspired” for some school work, or when I just want to relax to the rhythm of this sweet and long river. I assure you that you can almost feel the water running through your body as you listen to this marvellous interpretation. (Fun fact: the melody was delivered to the State of Israel so that they could use it as their national anthem)
