How does one create interest in heat related illnesses / heat action planning in a neighborhood where people are worried mainly about making rent, getting the kids to school and surviving? This community project has been challenging for me to gain traction even though it is one of the hottest neighborhoods, lowest tree coverage, no public shade structures or water mar stops, in the county. The bus stops are just a pole and a sign. Horne/Broadway. It’s called Nature’s Cooling Systems Project Over ten years (2006-2016), there have been more than 900 deaths due to heat in Maricopa County. There have also been almost 11,000 deaths due to heat in a six-year period (2008-2014). The valley is one of the hottest metro areas in the country. People at greatest risk for heat-related illness and death include infants and young children, the elderly, people who are overweight or who have existing medical conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, people who are socially isolated, and the poor. Even young and healthy individuals can succumb to heat if they are active during hot weather. We are working with local partners in three neighborhoods in Phoenix and Mesa to find solutions with residents to create a healthier environment for hot areas across the valley and to introduce heat reduction and relief into regional planning efforts.
