Attack of the Tortillas
I went into work this morning at 5, just like normal. I was about to start prep. First things first: Parfaits. I got the yogurt, cups, lids, stickers, spoons and granola packets ready. I started by putting a spoon full of yogurt in each cup, as per usual. When that was finished, it was time to get the strawberries and blueberries from the freezer.
I made my way over to the freezer, and extended my arms to pick up the heavy box filled with sliced strawberries. Just as I muster the strength to hold it with one arm in order to get the blueberries container, I am hit on my entire left side with a really, really heavy box from above. A tortilla box. The box of strawberries I was holding in my left arm of course fell to the ground as my arm and shoulder were hit. It was excruciating. I got out of the freezer and immediately asked our maintenance man to help me pick up my mess. I was in terrible pain, but you know me, I continued to work, all with one arm/hand. It was hard, our maintenance man helped me cut things open and grab things whenever I needed it, so that was good.
After a while, on of my managers came up to me and gasped. I thought she was shocked at my excellent skills of getting Saran Wrap and wrapping one of the containers one-handed, but that wasn’t the case. I looked down and saw my left hand was incredibly swollen, looking as if it was fighting the urge to bust out of the latex gloves I had on. I gasped as well. I told her that I don’t know what happened, and it must have been from the fall. She asked me if I could feel something, to which I looked at her confused. It turns out that she was slightly pricking my hand with a pen. I couldn’t feel it. After that, she asked me to come into the office, where she filled out an accident report, and told me to go home. She didn’t want me to do everything with one hand, and wanted me to go to the hospital.
I told her I could still work, but she didn’t want me to take any chances. I called my parents and was able to go home within a few minutes. They, of course, didn’t see anything wrong with my swollen hand and pained arm, but I was just happy to be able to rest the other arm for a while.
It’s been about fifteen hours since the incident, and my hand is no longer swollen. The box had actually dislocated my shoulder and arm, and I had to get it put back into place, which was insanely painful. I was told that the swelling of my hand may have been caused by stress from the pain in my arm and shoulder, but I’m not entirely sure, but that seems to make the most sense.
I’m off for the next two days, so hopefully my arm will stop hurting completely by Wednesday.
Thank you for reading my little story time. I guess I’m just happy to have feeling in my hand again, haha.
Have a great night.
xx
