did something specific happen recently
Yes, and no. Tom gave an interview to GQ last month (published today) and the resulting article is utterly Tom.

Interesting. I do wish he'd lighten up and not be so rigidly posh. It's tries too hard.
The thing is, he IS that rigidly posh. He tries to downplay it, but he told a story in an interview (Tom’s story are always to be taken with a grain of salt, I admit) where his grandfather told him what you did. They met some of his grandfather’s friends for a beer or so, and Tom was too Tom. ;)

Naive boy is cute. Naive man? Not so much. People are expected to grow wiser. I'm not saying they have to. But if you are going to play the game might as well win it
It’s against our expectations. Especially in that business. And then playing Loki who is cunning through and through. ;)

He's got thin skin. This industry turns the best of them to jaded cynical people! I really do hope he'd grow a shell to protect the nice and compassionate person he is. The interview you are refering to today, ( I suppose) was not that bad, I think it was a kind of closure to himon many levels, also to refute the PR part in that swiftshit. My guess he was truthful, and wants the world to know.Having said all of that, it will serve no purpose to keep rehashing old stories, in one month everyone will forget, like they did before, time to move on and look forward to what he'll doing this year. :)
The moment he grows a shell he loses what makes him. That childlike enthusiasm only happens when you don’t have one. That’s the paradox. It’s not just that interview and it is not even that summer. I’ve been in this fandom for six years or so and things like this always happen. The fans love him for his uninhibited excitement (the dorky interviews, the slumber party, the promo tours, etc.), but at other times exactly this backfires on him and there are always fans and non-fans that call him out. There are two sides to a medal. The same things that are making people love him at one point, might open him up to ridicule at another.
