Total Noob question

But what the heck is a "Grid"/" Magna Gird"/ "Omega Grid" and why do I need one for this game????

I understand the basics of the weapon system but I'm trying to read the wiki and literally none of it makes sense. I'm not quite high enough to be able to grind for the SSR weapons (except in specific cases (Side storys and the WTSB2(?) Event)) what should I do????????? I hardly have enough SR weapons to fill a grid of each Type.... (For example, I have like 6-7 Wind SRs/SSRs)

Help?
