“ i’ve been watching them go at it for hours , ” them refers to the magically enchanted gingerbread cookies his sister , basia , gave him as an early gift. and for hours he means literally , for hours , as they began to construct an intricate and fully functioning city within his bedroom. street lights and all. everything , also , made out of gingerbread cookies.
he sighs, rubbing his temples because he knows , he knows he can hear basia’s cackling down the hall at yet another unnecessary , potentially messy gift given. “ right now they’re debating politics , i think. from the way they’re getting all riled up. i haven’t had the heart to set them on fire yet . . . they’re trying so hard. ”
