Roschka Reviews: Before I'm Gone by Heidi McLaughlin
My friend gave me this book for my birthday, so I promised myself that I would not only read it, but finish it, even if I didn't enjoy it. This isn't remotely my normal type of book (I'm a huge fan of Gillian Flynn, GRRM, and Kurt Vonnegut, and I typically prefer thrillers or fantasy), but I gave it my best shot. If only the author of this book had given it HER best shot...
The writing was mildly awful from the get-go. It was clunky, and repetitive; for example, the main character's name is Palmer and I can't tell you how many paragraphs (at least toward the beginning) were essentially "Palmer did this. Palmer thought about that. Then Palmer worried about this. Something else happened. Palmer did this other thing." Maybe I'm just picky, but I felt like the writing was like that of a sixth grader: they've got a story, but they have zero clue how to properly tell it. The dialogue was kind of stiff, meant for effectively conveying things rather than, like, telling a story. The writing just didn't flow and was so painfully dull I thought my brain was going to explode.
The story itself was all right, albeit hilariously predictable. This book is about a woman diagnosed eith a terminal disease and her EMT friend who tries to help her cross things off her bucket list. It was clearly supposed to be a tear-jerker, but a lot of the emotional lines just kind of fell flat. I just wasn't hooked on this book at all, nor was I invested in the characters' stories.
I also took issue with how perfect the main male character was. He was clearly the author's dream guy, and she took too much time overexplaining exactly how kind and respectful he was. Honestly, there was too much overexplaining in general. Some paragraphs were unnecessarily detailed, especially since most of the time they were describing things only slightly relevant. Speaking of main characters though, the female main character, Palmer, was honestly a nothingburger of a person with no personality outside of the fact that she liked Lana del Rey.
In the end, I wasn't able to finish this book. The writing was just too awful, somehow both repetitive and inconsistent, and I couldn't take it anymore. I tried for two months to read this book, but alas, it is just too damn boring and badly written. So imagine my surprise when I go to Goodreads and see a bunch of 5 star reviews from people who read books similar to this one, saying that it's the most beautiful thing they've ever read and it was just so so good. The 1 and 2 star reviews essentially echo what I've said here, which made me feel a little more sane.
That's all I have to say about this horrible book. Don't bother reading it. Read something actually good instead.
