I mean, I don’t really see myself as demeaning her? I think that her claim in this case - that women in Tolkien’s universe don’t do battle - is demonstrably untrue in the canon of Arda. Her video essay 100% deserves its Hugo nomination, and I don’t like. Actively hate her for her work? She’s one of my favorite media critics working today. I’m salty, and annoyed, but that’s because she makes a comment about how she’s intimately familiar with the source material behind the Hobbit trilogy, and then she made a comment like that. Ellis definitely did her best, though, on the rest of the essay, and I don’t want to claim otherwise.
I will say I’m... I don’t really know what you mean by “some people forget how old that stuff is”? If you’re referring to Tolkien’s works, sure, it’s older, but Conan Doyle and Burroughs are older still. What is it you’re referring to?
