Spoink’s ADORABLE. Like, criminally so. It’s incredibly simple – just a small pig’s head on a bouncy spring-like tail – but that’s GREAT. Just a bouncy little pig friend!!!! Also, with a big pearl on its head, supposedly a reference to the phrase “pearls before swine”, which is apparently a phrase that also exists in Japan.
Spoink’s bouncing is a great concept in itself, though, and it feels oddly appropriate for a pig what with their tails already being spring-like. It’s not also often the Pokedex discusses a pokemon’s mortality, but it does with this adorable critter. Spoink’s bounciness is actually INTEGRAL to Spoink’s survival, as the shock of it is what keeps its heart beating!!! As the Pokedex states simply, Spoink’s bouncing must thus be constantly maintained, or else Spoink’s heart will stop. Gotta keep bouncing!!!!! :)
As a Psychic-type, the pearl’s function is to amplify Spoink’s psychokinetic powers, and it constantly searches for larger pearls, sourced from Clamperl. That’s some neat flavour, buuut Clamperl lives on the ocean floor, and Spoink clearly doesn’t, so I’m not sure how that’s supposed to work? Does Spoink rob jewelry stores or what???? Or maybe Spoinks go on cute little deep-sea diving expeditions together????? Also uh. Clamperl’s pearl usually has a face and presumably houses its consciousness, so are these like. Dead Clamperls?????? IS SPOINK A MURDERER?????????
Spoink’s got a lovely shiny, swapping the pearl colour with the skin colour, albeit with a much more beige-y pink. I prefer the base colours overall, but shinies like this are generally fantastic, and this one’s no exception. Spoink’s just got great colours no matter what!
Anyways, I love Spoink! It’s actually surprisingly morbid, given it’s apparently parading around another pokemon’s corpse as it frantically tries to keep its own heart beating by bouncing profusely, but animals just be like that sometimes. And it’s super cute!!!
