One of us left the farm.

He was from my litter, and was picked to be a wooling Mareep. He found out from the guard Pokémon, and was not happy. “I can’t be a Mareep my whole life!”, he said, holding back tears. “I don’t want to stay like this, I want to evolve, like Ma and Pa!”

He was in a fit for days, before he came to a decision: He would leave the farm, and train until he evolved into a Flaaffy. That way, he would be hard to wool, and would be given away to someone that would - hopefully - evolve him.

And so he left, out the busted fence at the back of the pen when the guards were keeping patrol somewhere else. No matter how much we pleaded or tried to reason, he would not listen. And so he left. I thought we’d never see him again.

Until the day he came back.

I was the one to find him, while wandering at the edge of the fence. Near the stream outside the farm, I saw him. Wool tangled and still damp, blackened by moss and leaves and twigs tangled in it. He was not breathing. He was not moving. His tail orb was missing.

Three things changed in the farm after the incident. The fences were fixed and reinforced, and the trainers gathered more Pokémon for guard duty. The far end of the pen was forever being watched.

After his death, they began to appear. They only appeared at night, and were almost invisible, except for their gleaming eyes that broke through the dark. Many were fought, but none were ever caught or defeated, to remain unknown.

I never approached the fence’s edge ever again.
