You ALSO see “We Will Commit Wolf Murder” as a Smellen song? Beautiful (I have now adopted that ship name, for better or for worse.) I think that a lot of Rio Romeo songs fit them but I never considered Absence, that’s so smart… Rio Romeo the person they are! <3 carried like half my tastes in shipping the past couple of years.

I like to think of (following songs are all from Rio Romeo) Something’s Gotta Give for a way fluffier interpretation of them two… an “old immovable object, like me” being Hellen and her finding Sam to be an “irresistible force” because he’s just so open about his love and friendliness even post apocalypse, that’s it’s kind of hard to NOT be drawn towards the guy; I’m trying to fight my aromantic demons but sometimes they win, so I interpret “somewhere, somehow, someone’s gonna be kissed” as Sam finally leaning against Hellen on a couch or smth or against her leg slumped on the floor to go to sleep since it seems just as intimate... but that’s enough of aro interpretations. I listened to Butch 4 Butch and originally thought it was from Hellen’s perspective, because Sam’s piano IS rat-filled (rat baby child) and her piano is filled with bugs (either maggots from the corpses of the people she’s killed, or pests on her plants if you don’t feel like being gnarly lol), “tomorrow we’ll dig through the garbage” is them scavenging, and the “and she’ll probably kick my fucking ass” part/lyric was them sitting on the couch playing a game together… maybe a fighting game or just those two fighting someone else. Soft Bitch also got to me but the “I used to wilt flowers, now I make them grow” part made me tear up thinking of how Hellen used to scare Rat Child but now they’re friends and the former is so comfortable with the latter… Rat Child even makes a mask for Hellen and SHE WEARS IT!!! I can’t stress how much that means to me, she used to scare everything capable of it, including small animals, animals in general, and humans, but now she’s learned how to be tender with them and understand them, like how long it takes to adapt to guinea pigs being skittish… can you tell I have a lot of experience with anxious small animals? Anyways, Hellen Voorhees the woman you are (headcanon surname) ❤️

One last thing, of all the plants Hellen reminds me of, it has to be Mimosa Pudica/the Shyplant because they literally “hide away” when touched, as in they fold their leaves down… it’s really neat and it made me think of Hellen. I'm so glad you think We Will Commit Murder fits them!! I love it and I very much think it fits them (esp how Hellen sees Sam imo) ALSO for the ship name Smellen I didn't come up with it but I saw someone talk about it (I can't remember who) and I thought it was really silly so I use it sometimes hehe.

I LOVE RIO ROMEO and I love those songs with them too!! I added them to the SamHellen playlist cause I liked them a lot!! Only if that's cool with you tho! If not just lmk and I'll take them off!

I added Know How by The Crane Wives today. When I initially listened to the song it made me think of what its like to fall OUT of love, but in the context of SamHellen it actually makes me think of how Hellen would feel towards Sam showing her affection and CLEARLY having more than platonic feelings for her and she notices she reciprocates them but is also terrified. I have SOOOO many headcanons on this and her feelings on loving others but I'll save them for now cause that's a whole other rambling session lolol.

I commented this on a fanfic, but I'll say it here too. I 100% think she's the kind of character who fears no physical danger, but is terrified of Sam being afraid of her or made uncomfortable by her. I really do see her as a big softie who's just put up all these walls and appears scary and unapproachable out of (what she feels like is) necessity.

I think at first Hellen would kind of be like "Uh huh, this guy is WAY too nice, there has to be some ulterior motive here." And keeps herself at a distance, but then Sam just keeps being Sam, and Hellen accepts that he's a (sometimes stupidly) selfless, sweet person. I feel like she'd grow more protective over him because of this.

I feel like they'd be really good at taking care of each other, and reminding each other to take care of themselves. Hellen is incredibly observant, she catches it when he's doing something self-sacrificing, or not taking care of himself, and calls him out on it. Then Sam, notices just small differences in Hellen's behavior because he knows her and wants her to be okay. Maybe she's just keeping herself busy to the point of exhaustion just to fight off shitty feelings and thoughts, and Sam pushes her to talk about it, which she hated before, cause she thought he was being nosy, but then realized he pushes her to talk out of care and concern.
