Wayne pulled over on the side of the road to park his truck, the old bucket of bolts having thankfully survived the resent earthquakes that had sent his home and most of his belongings into a fiery inferno. Checking to make sure no other telltale headlights were shining down either side of the path, he stepped out of the car and moved around to the back, pulling out the flashlight he kept back there.
It occurred to him anyone else out there to spot what he was doing might call it suspicious, the uncle of a suspected killer out in the predawn hours getting ready to go over the scene of one of the murders, but the thought only made him give a derisive snort. If the cops were so eager to close the case on the so-called ‘Hellfire Murders’ with his nephew in the frame, they could deal with him checking their work now the area was no longer an active crime scene.
Besides, what harm was a middle-aged man like him going to be able to do all alone out here?
