Milo - A Toothpaste Suburb Ya’ll ready for a serious rarity? This is one of my favorite albums and 110% my favorite album of 2014, without hesitation. There are very, very few copies of this record in existence and frankly I’m not sure how I lucked out and found one, but here we are. Milo quickly become one of my favorite rappers and storytellers and this album is, in my opinion, one of the most creative and strong releases in his catalog and that is a bold statement because I’m convinced he’s incapable of putting out anything less than solid gold. The very first track has one of the most addictive and incredible beats with a loopy, undulating synth line over it and I fell so in love with this track that I listened to it on repeat before, during, and after my move to Seattle and now I associate it with being lonely, cold, and somewhat lost in a new place in the middle of a windy, rainy season that never seemed to end. It’s a song and an album that can instantly take me back to a distinct moment in time and I really don’t pull it off the shelf too often...but tonight was the right night for it. Milo keeps to himself and stays away from social media for the most part. I’ve really stepped in it before in the past joking with some of his friends in Hellfyre Club about when he’s going to join and got put in my place pretty squarely. I get it, and honestly I respect whatever he chooses to do. I do hope, however, that he knows how important his art and his music is to so many of us collectors because he’s one of few musicians I’ve ever seen gain such a rabid and loyal following who are willing to fork over literal hundreds of dollars to get their hands on records like this. This album absolutely changed my life for a time and provided a beautiful soundtrack to an uncertain time. I hope you will check it out, too.
