Dodo is a strange man, with an even stranger fascination with my sex life with Amsel. It is disconcerting. Still, as a child he was…sweet. Endearing. I was honored that he asked me to be a mother figure to him.
…perhaps that will circumvent any future attempts at installing windows in my lab.
Hopefully.
Day in the life of...HELLO DODO!
Talented screenprinting couple Ali Lewry and James Beale make up Hello Dodo, a Brighton based brand who design and print funky artwork from their home with their homemade printing press Preston! Their many aim is to make people smile, and their work frequently features puns and witty typography.
Their range spans artwork, cards, printed bags, cute little badges and more recently some fabulous clothes, including my favourite muse the Narwhale!!! (This top ROCKS by the way guys!)
Their work is frequently featured in the press, including Mollie Makes and Vogue, and their work can also be found on the prestigious Not on the High Street. We are delighted to also have the talented duo at our exhibition currently running at Brighton Fishing Quarter Gallery, untill 13th May, so please pop in and check out their work if your in the area and the other talented designers and makers exhibiting.
Here they share with us a day in their life, and show us the shenanigans they get up to!
Zzzzzz… Our day gets off to a bit of a slow start! As you can probably tell from our ‘Nice Lion’ screenprint we’re not exactly morning people. But I think we’ve got a good excuse for a bit of a snooze as it IS the Easter weekend and an hour has been stolen from us overnight! How unfair!
Ok, we’re finally up and about! But rule number 1 is that nothing gets done before coffee has been poured.
We work on refining our new range of designs for a while…these are TOP SECRET! We’re really excited to be bringing these out soon as we’ve been working on some of them for a while now and we’re a bit besotted with them. They’re also possibly slightly ridiculous. Watch this space! We also reply to emails from stockists and update facebook. Ali is usually glued to twitter and instagram throughout the day.
We pop in to town for a bit of fresh air and drop in to our gorgeous stockist Edited on Bond Street. It’s super busy in there and one of the owners Robyn lets us know he’s sold one of our Party Animal Elephant prints that morning. Yay!
As the sun is shining we decide to pop down to the seafront. We try to make the most of any good weather and do this as often as we can.. after 2 and a half years of living in Brighton the novelty of hanging out on the beach still hasn’t worn off. Brighton has been a massive inspiration for a lot of our designs, here Ali models her ‘Rock Paper Scissors’ tote bag.
We drop in to the Maker’s Boutique exhibition in the Fishing Quarter Gallery to chat to Hannah (and Bean!) and to collect keys for the gallery as we’ll be running it by ourselves next Saturday. No inside pics I’m afraid you’ll have to just go and check the show out for yourselves! :D
Here is an example of another Brighton-inspired screenprint design you can find from us though, available at the Fishing Quarter Gallery…
A bit more beach fun! But bbbrrrrr the sun has disappeared now and it’s getting pretty chilly. Time to head home and do some more work! This time last year we were paddling in the sea most days, unbelievable!
Back at the flat we decide to do a print run of one of our most popular designs ‘Animal Alphabet’ as we’re getting a bit low. This design always does well at markets as everyone has lots of fun trying to guess all the animals…not as easy as it sounds! As you can see our “studio” is our kitchen worktop and our printing press is a piece of MDF that we like to affectionately call Preston.
Time to admire the new prints in the drying rack. Think you can guess what all of these guys are?
Time to relax now! We reward ourselves for a day’s hard work with some Jammie Dodgers! :o)
