I didn't realise it before now, but the main theme of Umbra is trust. Most of the characters over the course of the story have to learn how to trust in themselves, or trust other people. And there are a couple of people who have to stop trusting some really toxic characters (and in some ways people in general, and start looking after themselves instead.

(is that theme undermined by like half the main cast being back-stabby bastards??? man i hope not)

I guess that what I've learnt since I started writing with the serious intention is that it's important to write what you would like to read, not what you think makes good writing. Writing something dark and disturbing doesn't make you a good writer. It doesn't make you edgy or interesting. Likewise, writing something sweet and clichèd doesn't make you a good writer. It doesn't make you adorable or romantic. Writing something sexy, or mysterious, or scary... These things don't make good writing by and of themselves, and it's useless to try to 'write good' by writing something with a particular theme or subject if your heart isn't in it. What makes good writing is putting your feelings into a story you are passionate about. It's no good to write particular characters doing particular things if, in your heart, you don't feel they would actually do them. It's no good to write something that you would not enjoy reading. Good writing is, above all else, selfish. I'm not trying to say that criticism isnt important, but that you need to write for you, not because you want to be seen as 'laid back' or 'complex' or 'cutting edge'. The important thing is to be yourself, and start from there. Don't try to be someone else, because you are just peachy the way you are, and the poems and stories and songs inside your head simply can't be written by anybody else.

What the appeal of a septum piercing? I've always thought that they looked like bull snout rings, but I see a ton of people with said piercing anyways

I... actually, I'm not sure... They do tend to look a lot like bull rings, now you mention it (although you can get the most beautiful jewellery for them!)

I think I associate good things with septum piercings because an old crush of mine had a septum piercing and they were a really good, beautiful and interesting person. For some reason, those positive associations are still around years later, haha
