A plant for bristly oxen
This plant shows its bright yellow blooms in June a bit uphill from the shore, sprouting in solitary stands amidst the barley, oats, and other grasses on the hillsides. It’s Helminthotheca echioides, commonly known as bristly oxtongue. It would have to be a tough-tongued oxen to munch on it, as the leaves are armed with bristles and spikes, see second picture below.
