REPOSTED FROM ONE LASALLE E-GROUP:
As of 1:35 p.m. this afternoon (Sunday, December 18, 2011), the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has announced that "the death toll from (the) storm-triggered flash floods that devastated a wide swath of the country's south has risen to 521. Gwendolyn Pang, PRC secretary general, said Sunday that the death toll would most likely rise, with 458 people still missing and many villages remaining isolated and unreached by overwhelmed disaster-response personnel. Pang said the hardest-hit cities were Cagayan de Oro city, where at least 239 people died, and nearby Iligan, where Red Cross aid workers reported 195 dead, mostly children and women."
Martha Giltendez of La Salle Academy, Iligan, Lanao del Norte wrote: "We are here in school preparing the place for the wake of our personnel's families, 7 are confirmed dead. We found out that the school is flooded with mud. A lot of our facilities are destroyed." Br Dennis Magbanua FSC added: "Several LSA faculty members, support staff and students lost their homes. One teacher lost her brother, another lost her parents and a sister. Another teacher lost her mother and two brothers. One night high school student reportedly died too. The school was also flooded (about one to two feet high). Clearing of the mud in the classrooms and offices has commenced. Wakes for the members of the Lasallian Family will also be held on campus because the funeral parlors are full."
