A BROKE MAN WITH POWER

In the ruling of Kincaid v. Fresno, the homeless residents of Fresno, California won a settlement of $2.35 million for the unconstitutional search and seizures of their possessions by the City of Fresno. The class of homeless people were represented by a team of attorneys including the ACLU, LCCR, and the law firm of Heller Ehrman LP. A million dollars out of the settlement went to a Housing Allowance Account for the 225 class members in the lawsuit. Another $400,000 was set aside for those who went through suffrage due to the loss of personal items. The department of transportation will put in another $85,000 in this money. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND

Homeless people have enough to worry about due to their harsh and a bit scary living conditions. They are exposed to many diseases and sicknesses, BUT a selective amount of cities offer free clinics where homeless people go to get help. Also, homeless people deal with a lot of abuse. People sometimes beat them up for their little money and clothes, and they deal with violence with the police (which we never here about). Death, which also occurs in extreme conditions, is a problem the homeless have to keep in mind as well. Many homeless people in Alaska die due to being too cold. Homeless people not having jobs concludes to them either selling drugs or most of all prostitution. Prostitution, which is illegal,  exposes them to physical abuse and STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease). 

People who are homeless spend more time in jail or prison, which is tremendously costly to the state and locality. Often, time served is a result of laws specifically targeting the homeless population, including regulations against loitering, sleeping in cars, and begging. The recession will force 1.5 million more people into homelessness over the next two years. We are paying more money to keep these residents homeless than we would  if we housed them. 

Cleaning and giving homeless opportunities to work and live will make the streets of Fresno safer and cleaner. This could possibly save a lot of homeless peoples lives as well as improving them. Tax payers shouldn't be paying more for them to stay in the streets when we could pay less and keep them safe by giving them more shelter. It is also, i believe, the police departments job to help them and do everything possible to keep them safe. If they see them being abused or in need of help they should act upon them immediately.
