Hen 2-437
Hen 2-437 is a planetary nebula in the Milky Way, located towards the constellation Vulpecula, the Fox. Some 3000 planetary nebulae have been found within our galaxy, many with the more characteristic spherical shape but some with “bipolar” jets like Hen 2-437.
Planetary nebula form at the end of a medium (Sun-sized) star’s life. After running out of fuel and expanding into a red giant star, it emits its outer layers and shrinks into a white dwarf. Radiation and stellar winds from the core star shape and illuminate the cast off material, creating stunning nebulae.

Hen 2-437
In this cosmic snapshot, the spectacularly symmetrical wings of Hen 2-437 show up in a magnificent icy blue hue. Hen 2-437 is a planetary nebula, one of around 3,000 such objects known to reside within the Milky Way.
Located within the faint northern constellation of Vulpecula (The Fox), Hen 2-437 was first identified in 1946 by Rudolph Minkowski, who later also discovered the famous and equally beautiful M2-9 (otherwise known as the Twin Jet Nebula). Hen 2-437 was added to a catalog of planetary nebula over two decades later by astronomer and NASA astronaut Karl Gordon Henize.
Planetary nebulae such as Hen 2-437 form when an aging low-mass star — such as the sun — reaches the final stages of life. The star swells to become a red giant, before casting off its gaseous outer layers into space. The star itself then slowly shrinks to form a white dwarf, while the expelled gas is slowly compressed and pushed outwards by stellar winds. As shown by its remarkably beautiful appearance, Hen 2-437 is a bipolar nebula — the material ejected by the dying star has streamed out into space to create the two icy blue lobes pictured here.

Hubble brengt de ijzige blauwe vleugels van een planetaire nevel in beeld
De Hubble-ruimtetelescoop heeft een opname gemaakt van de planetaire nevel Hen 2-437, waarbij de prachtige symmetrische vleugels mooi in het oog springen. Een planetaire nevel is het resultaat van het overlijden van een zonachtige ster. Dit soort sterren ontploffen niet, maar stoten in het zogenaamde rode reuzenstadium hun buitenlagen het heelal in, die dan verlicht worden tot prachtige kleuren door de krachtige straling van de naakte kern, die voortaan als een witte dwerg door het leven zal gaan.
Planetaire nevels hebben niets met planeten te maken, maar zijn zo genoemd door astronomen uit de 18de eeuw. Gezien door hun primitieve telescopen, leek zo’n nevel op het schijfje van een planeet uit het zonnestelsel. Er zijn zo’n 3000 planetaire nevels bekend in de Melkweg en dat lijkt vreemd, want het zouden er veel meer moeten zijn. Helaas is een planetaire nevel echter geen lang leven beschoren: na een paar duizend jaar zijn ze geheel vervlogen, een oogwenk in het miljarden jaren durende leven van zo’n ster.
Hen 2-437 bevindt zich in het sterrenbeeld Vulpecula (Vosje) en is in 1946 ontdekt door Rudolph Minkowski, die later de beroemde (en soortgelijke) planetaire nevel M2-9 heeft ontdekt. Beide nevels zijn voorbeelden van bipolaire nevels, waarbij de uitstroom van materie vooral aan de polen plaatsvindt (vermoedelijk door de invloed van een begeleidende ster). Hierbij zijn de ijzige blauwe lobben gevormd die op de foto zichtbaar zijn.
