Man Creates New Instrument Called 'Cat Organ' [Watch Video]
Have you ever wondered what cats mean when they “meow”? Cats’ meowing has been used in so many viral videos online. It’s usually used to make a funny electronic remix, but Henry Dagg had a different use for the cats’ meow.
In the 1550s, a bizarre instrument called “The Katzenklavier” was invented by Jean-Baptiste Weckerlin. They say this instrument was allegedly made of real life cats, which is totally inhumane, right? Although there has been no physical evidence to the existence of “The Katzenklavier,” stories about it have been heard worldwide. According to Messy Beast:
The Cat Organ or Cat Piano (Katzenklavier) was an alleged musical instrument comprising a line of seven to nine cats held in place with their tails stretched out underneath a keyboard. When a key was pressed, the tail underneath was either pulled, struck or spiked, and the corresponding cat cried out in pain. The cats would be arranged according to the natural tone of their voices allowing tunes to be played. There are no records of a genuine Cat Organ actually being built, however the story has been re-reported several times since the 1550s.
At first, I thought this was a reinvention of the bizarre instrument but it’s absolutely not. Henry Dagg made the “Cat Organ” with feline stuffed toys. So nothing cruel was inflicted to any cat in the making of this invention.
In the video, Henry Dagg is playing the old time classic “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” While he was tapping on his “Cat Organ keys,” meows on different notes can be heard. His timing was on point that it would seem like the toy cats were actually singing the song. It’s obvious that that Dagg had already mastered the art of playing the “Cat Organ.”
As to how the organ works, according to Telegraph, “The instrument, which from some angles may have looked a little like a harpsichord, has two rows of eight stuffed toy cats. Each one squeaks a different note, giving the organist a range of two octaves and the ability to murder almost any song.”
It’s absolutely amazing but really perplexing! It’s amazing because it’s basically a bunch of cats singing the song, which, by the way, is also cute. It’s perplexing because the way the music is being produced is really confusing. I bet a lot of people who watched Henry Dagg play this instrument initially thought, “How on Earth is he able to do that?!”
