Henry Jacobs and Jordan Belson at the Morrison Planetarium, 1959.
In 1957-59, Belson collaborated with sound artist Henry Jacobs on the Vortex Concerts, Together they produced a series of electronic music concerts accompanied by visual projections at the Planetarium, the Vortex Concerts. Belson as visual director programmed kinetic live visuals, and Jacobs programmed electronic music and audio experiments. This is a direct ancestor of the 60s light shows and the "Laserium"-style shows that were popular at planetaria later in the century. The Vortex shows involved projected imagery, specially prepared film excerpts and other optical projections. Not just an opportunity to develop new visual technologies and techniques, the sound system in the planetarium enabled Belson and Jacobs to create an immersive environment where imagery could move throughout the entire screen space, and sound could move around the perimeter of the room.

This is the liner notes for the Folkways album FSS 603, Highlights From Vortex. It includes information about the Vortex concerts organized by Henry Jacobs and Jordan Belson from 1957 to 1959.
‘‘ From 1957 to 1959, Belson collaborated with Henry Jacobs, as Visual and Audio Coordinator respectively, to present a series of 62 Vortex Concerts in the Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. There, for 50 minutes, within the rarified realm of the planetarium's velvet-black void, with forty stereophonic surround sound speakers radiating Jacobs' electronic music from a four track tape recorder, Belson’s cosmic abstract imagery would take over, illuminated throughout the theater by as many as 70 slide, film and strobe projection devices as well as the planetarium “starscape” projectors.’‘
