Catching up with Henry [Part 1/3] [7 years ago]
We're taking detour this week to catch up with Henry. A special thank you to @ravingsockmonkey for asking about him and inspiring me to pay him a visit 💖
The last we saw of Henry he had settled down in Henford and was quickly befriended by Ian Moody and Derek McMillan – The best thing that could’ve happened to him honestly.
For a long time, Henry was apprehensive about dating. So, he focused on himself. His garden. His animals. And he settled into his new life.
He was happy.
But after a while, he started to feel like something was missing. He wanted someone to share this life with. So, he decided to start putting himself out there.
Much to his disappointment, though, no one in town really caught his eye. There were some nice guys. A few of them attractive even. But there was never that spark. The one that gave him butterflies in his stomach, and made his knees weak, and filled him with a mix of nervousness and excitement and desire. That’s what he wanted. He wanted to feel what a certain someone had once made him feel. Long ago. And he wasn’t going to settle for less.
He was nearly ready to give up when someone new moved in down the road. He showed up at the lake where Henry liked to swim on warm days. Eye contact. And a smile. Heart pounding.
“Nice day,” the man said. Henry nodded enthusiastically, a smile spreading across his face far too wide for mundane small talk, “Yes. Beautiful.” But he wasn’t talking about the sunny weather. “I’m Sam.” “Henry.” “Nice to meet you, Henry. I’ll see you around.”
Henry wanted to catch up with him. To strike up a conversation and get to know him. But he was unable to do more than watch him walk away because he suddenly couldn’t remember how swimming worked.
The next day, Sam came by the lake again.
He spotted Henry off to the side, moving his body in a way that appeared to be something adjacent to dancing. Alone. With no music.
Sam looked around, unsure if he should be amused or concerned.
And then he saw the wild rabbit at Henry’s feet, bouncing excitedly before turning over on its back for Henry to rub its belly.
Sam was intrigued by this tall, goofy, yet surprisingly sweet man with the terrible barely-there mustache and pale blue eyes that lit up when looked over and caught him staring.
“Nice moves,” Sam joked.
Henry laughed, a flush of red creeping up his neck to his ears. “What can I say? He loves it,” he said, indicating toward the rabbit.
“Are you sure he’s not just mocking you?”
“Oh, I’m certain he is.”
The two talked for hours that day, the conversation flowing easily from one topic to the next.
Henry learned that Sam was originally from Henford. He left after high school to complete a Language and Literature degree at Brightchester University and then settled down in Windenburg.
He returned to Henford to help his aging parents with their large farm. They were still active and in relatively good health, but his dad had had a fall recently. He was okay, but it made Sam worry. Being a writer, he could technically work from anywhere, and he hoped a change of scenery would bring renewed inspiration. So, he packed up and moved back to his hometown.
Henry told Sam about the religious small town and family he left behind. The only family he had now was Ian and Derek up the road, and his best friend who lived in Brindleton Bay. Though, his mother would secretly call when she could to check on him, which he appreciated since they’d always been close.
They enjoyed each other’s company so much, they agreed to meet for a drink the following day…
