Young Artist Spotlight #3: Cody Herlihy

Drawing inspiration from family snapshots and photo-albums, Cody Herlihy documents his seemingly average New England family with an artistic eye in his project Homestead.

One element separating this work from amateur family snapshots is the range of emotions displayed with an unflinching eye. A family photo-album is typically comprised of images documenting the best parts of a families past; group photos on vacation, graduations and birthdays, thus creating an idealized family history. Herlihy's photographic family history neglects the typically preserved moments in favor of documenting the mundane and psychological. The people Herlihy shows us present the camera with details small and large, bestowing an extraordinary element to the mundane, and revealing a deeper look into their lives.

Cody Herlihy is from Acton, Massachusetts and graduated with a BFA in photography from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth in the spring of 2013.
