The Heraean Games by Prospero Piatti
The Heraea was an Ancient Greek festival in which young girls competed in a footrace. The race was held every four years at Olympia, and probably took place around the same time as the ancient Olympic Games.
In Olympia the women celebrate their Hera festival every four years. Sixteen chosen women, two from each community, preside over the festival. Hera is presented with a newly woven peplos. Maidens run races in the stadion dressed in the short chiton with the right shoulder bared. The prize is an olive branch and a portion of the cow slaughtered for Hera. The myth tells that Hippodameia instituted the festival of Hera in thanks for her marriage to Pelops. One chorus therefore sings and dances for Hippodameia, but there is another which performs for Physkoa, the lover of Dionysus whom the women invoke to appear as a bull.
