“Ponting’s darkroom” okay yes it was built for Ponting, but Ponting peaced out after a year. Also nobody liked him very much, lol.
Ponting got to leave Antarctica. Spencer-Smith did not.
To me, that darkroom belongs to Spencer-Smith. It was literally and figuratively his holy place. Who’s to say that his spirit does not still reside there to this day?
Charity Shop Find of the Week!
A lot of these I hadn't seen before and they really put so much into perspective.
Like, imagine trying to man-haul a sledge over this thing! Absolutely fuckin' not!
Or, even worse, imagine trying to lead an unruly, cold, tired horse over it!
Nice to see some lesser-spotted, underrated lads too.
Again, perspective!
And last but not least, my absolute favourite image in the whole book I think. Complete buffoonery. Congratulations lads, that's the worst anyone's ever done it!
Frederick Hooper of the Terra Nova Expedition
Photo taken by Herbert Ponting
While the source dates this image to 1907-1909, near-identical photos held by the Scott Polar Research Institute are labeled "Steward Frederick Hooper on his return from the Barrier. December 21 1911" which show an unsmiling Hooper with and without his hat.
some polar pics i saw at the museum of modern art in nyc today <3
the first two are Ponting's pictures from Terra Nova and the last one is Hurley's picture from Endurance!
