To add to the "did Herbert kill Rufus?" discussion:

I like to think yes bc when Dan reads Herbs notes in the basement it sais " successfully killed and brought back to life [...], cats, and dogs" so he has killed cats before. No inhibition there.

Also Herb is a liar and manipulator and i like my fictional characters as morally (dark-)grey as possible.

Also for Dan to still choose Herb over Meg after Herb murdered his cat is the kind of crazy girl behavior i expect of him.
