“I have to…” The words didn’t hold much bite, though. Somewhere in his mind, he knew he had to follow what the fates foretold but that didn’t mean his heart cared one inch if it meant that they were to now be apart. Hades, even his body fought against it by placing his fingers in her hair, almost trying to tie himself to her very being.
Even while new strings of fates were tying him elsewhere, to places far north than here. To people, he didn’t know or care about. To people, he couldn’t imagine caring about as much as he cared for the woman before him.
He didn’t go against death itself to win her back, only to leave her behind, yet this was the fork they now stood on. His forehead fell forward, brushing against hers. “Don’t hate me…”
Gods he was being cruel. What did he hope to accomplish by running his fingers through her hair? Remind her of the affection she would no longer have? She might have liked to think herself a strong woman but at this moment she was having trouble holding back the tears . “ Oh, I see. ” she blinked her eyes to rid herself of tears. “ Losing me was too much for you when I was all you had and now that you’re a hero I’m not enough to fight for. ” She should have known better. She had just been alone long enough that she was so eager to believe a man as sweet as him really existed. Even Hades tried to warn her that it wasn’t true. He was no better than Adonis. No, actually, he was worse. At least Adonis hadn’t made her believe that they would have some sort of future together.
A bitter laugh left her lips at his plea. “ I don’t hate you. That implies that I feel something and right now...... I don’t feel anything. ” She jerked away from his touch. Did he really expect her to be okay with this? To just step aside and let him go off to another land and marry another woman and be perfectly fine with having another failed sacrifice? “ What happened to you’d never, ever, hurt me? ”
