Since the incident wherein the Nohrian Queen had been poisoned, the royal guardsmen had watched over the Hyrulean royals like hawks, knowing there to be some sort of infiltration afoot. Vair, personally knowing the king and his family, knew damn well it wasn’t them who had perpetrated this act. He couldn’t speak much for the nobles, alas... While most of them stayed in line, there were a small handful who objected to the ongoing courtship of Zelda and Siegbert. And for all Vair knew, some of the quiet ones could have done it as well, could have secretly harbored their objections and waited to act...
But this was a serious act, undoubtedly considered by the Nohrians to be an act of war. Vair had heard of the precautions the Nohrians now took. How seriously poisoned their queen was. This was not something they would easily forgive if a Hyrulean noble had caused it– it would mean war, and war with the Nohrians could well mean Hyrule’s ruin. But it was not Vair’s place to ponder the politics and mystery of it; his place was to guard, protect, and serve. He hadn’t made his post for his brains...
His husband, on the other hand...
Shanz read over multiple reports turned in to the royal guards, both on the event and some dossiers on various nobles they suspected might have done it. But Shanz had a feeling, a terrible feeling that this mess went beyond the control of the nobility or royalty. He’d seen a few assassination attempts in his time in Hyrule– mostly on the king or princess– and he couldn’t think of any noble who would do such a thing. Acting behind the scenes would never bring about the changes that the nobles desired.
Moreover– one thing Shanz had observed was that people who did these things knew in advance what could happen, or what was likely to happen. They knew the Nohrians would lose their senses of reason and go on the highest possible alert. They knew that the hard-built trust between Nohr and Hyrule would dissolve like sugar in water. No noble would do such a thing– this was an act of war. And to speak as a former outsider, Shanz knew, if Hyrule and Nohr went to war against each other... Shanz wouldn’t bet on Hyrule’s victory. The Hyrulean nobles knew this. They also knew that losing a war was the greatest sin they could commit, a crime that meant death at best. Thus, if no one from the government had done this, then this had been done by an outside force. Someone who wanted Hyrule to crumble.
Shanz could think of a few individuals who fit the bill... but how would he get the Nohrians to see his reasoning? Preferably without explaining his unique point of view?
