Boats, Here Knows When, Oceans After, 2010
12/1/11 **** '.....Employing layered guitars, probing bass lines, and reverb layered vocals, Here Knows When create an atmosphere reminiscent of early Interpol, Ride and the Chameleons. Tracks like the freight-train of an opener Boats, the brooding Chloe and the album highlight ‘The Last You Spoke Of It’ illustrate the bands ability to write gargantuan tracks that unfurl into wide open caverns of loss, desperation and minor key brilliance. It's an impressive debut LP, rich guitar driven tracks wrought with disconnected emotions, faded lights and desperate catharsis – a powerful and effecting album. - music-press.co.uk, 12th Jan 2011

Here Knows When, Oceans After
This is an impressive debut LP, rich guitar driven tracks wrought with disconnected emotions, faded lights and desperate catharsis - it’s a powerful and effecting album.
Employing layered guitars, probing bass lines, and reverb layered vocals, Here Knows When create an atmosphere reminiscent of early Interpol, Ride and the Chameleons.
Tracks like the freight-train of an opener Boats, the brooding Chloe and the album highlight ‘The Last You Spoke Of It’ illustrate the bands ability to write gargantuan tracks that unfurl into wide open caverns of loss, desperation and minor key brilliance.
Angry epics like the rope-ready Resonate and cannonball Slide assert Here Knows When’s mastery of the post-punk genre while slower cuts , like As She Dances As She Sings and Pleasure to Know You bring out the foreboding vocal style of Charlie Howard while providing respite from the challenging heights this album traverses.
On the flipside of this , the very heights the tunes scale also work against it . By the second half of the LP you are exhausted and cant help but feel the band is as well. The tracks become less contained, with the earlier production polish and direction that held together tracks like The last You Spoke Of It and Fireflies go missing on Ruins and For The Lions.
That being said these are shortcomings of their own talent, Oceans After is a bold and demanding album which contains 9 rambunctious tunes that are as unyielding as they are captivating. With more control and direction of this restless spirit Here Knows When will go to great heights. 8/10
