Struggle
Bobbing my head to this beat Walking down the street And it's an uphill journey Witnessing the struggle firsthand I can't sleep 'Bums' at the bus stop shivering I can't eat Body laid out on a gourney On my way home from work, it's dark I can't see Working in a capitalistic society They think they got me, but I got them working for me And it's sad cuz for the work they don't pay me But it's Something deeper than revenue I'm earning Choked up, no ID So the police Let the streets Claim who they cannot see Another drug ridden mind wrapped in sheets An ordinary shift Slum clean up days don't cease I Bless these ignorant times With every line I speak But since they blind by sneaks To the back burner they throw peace, Sit outside all night they might even camp all week Keep in mind they paying HUNDREDS for shoes to put on they FEET, When some don't even know when next they will eat. And I never forgot the dream that lead to Martin's speech. Funny how we're forgetful why I aim to teach, And I never been disrespectful guess I'm fit to preach To our own people we're neglectful, Need this urgent peace And it's something jotted down in my memory I keep critical thinking in me 'Til I am deceased I'm Trotting over train tracks, knowing something blessed me, I close my eyes to imagine, Through this critical compassion I would gladly rally troops to call this rebel a has been Saying that I have been Blinded before but As this struggle worsens it gets harder to ignore I'm using up my pens to supply this growing trend Of insolence Towards ignorance We barter for our common sense With lethal injections Call it Intellectual Resurrection
New York Students Rising is launching a statewide tour!
Who Says
A college education should cost an arm and leg?
Corporations should have a place on our campus?
Students should have no say in what goes on in our universities?
We Say
Education is a universal human right
Public Education should be free
There is no place on our campus for corporations more interested in fracking and exploiting student resources
Who are we? We are New York Students Rising, a statewide coalition of students dedicated to defending public higher education in New York State. We are coming to take back our education. But first, NYSR is coming to YOU, to talk about how we can take back our education together.
This is not a lecture, this is the beginning of a movement. We are not here to educate you, to give you something, we are coming to ask you to join us, to work and build student power across the state together.
Students have played a key role in social movements all over the world, and these days are no different. It is time for us to realize our power , and to unify towards a common goal of free emancipatory education for all.
When education is under attack, what do we do? Stand up! Fight Back!
