"I didn’t do it."
“Okay, great for sharing but now I would want to hear the truth.”
A sickening and unexplainable sense of déjà vu washed over Regina on her journey back to her office. The sudden wave of nausea left her unsteady for a moment and she was forced to grapple the wall for support, lest she fall. For some reason she could not quite recall, she had locked her daughter away in her office and guarded it with a strong protection spell. That much she could remember, and yet her reasons had slipped from her mind. Strange. Perhaps it was a sign of her age.
Regaining her composure after a moment, Regina inhaled sharply before continuing her journey to the Mayor's Office. The authoritative clicking and clacking of her heels on the smooth floor echoed in the small corridor leading up to her office door, and the sound faded abruptly when she turned to address the defending magic she had previously raised to protect her only daughter. Regina flicked her hair back over her shoulder (out of habit more than anything) before reaching a perfectly manicured hand to the golden handle her office door. A brief and effortless wave of her hand over the door knob dissolved the protection barrier and she could feel the draining wash of magic slipping from the door to splash all over the floor in an invisible mess. With a purse of her painted lips, she twisted the handle and pushed the door ajar, only to feel something other than nausea sliver over her. Dark magic. And powerful magic, at that. Such power she had not felt since the Dark One had been amongst them, and later her half-sister Zelena.
Why would there be such ancient magic in her office?
