What is Hernia?
A hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall which often results in bulging out of fat. A hernia can occur in both men and women and even in infants. A hernia is mostly found near the belly button. Another common type of hernia is groin hernia.
Causes of Hernia
There are different reasons for the cause of hernia which are as follows:
Any condition that increases the pressure on the abdominal cavity such as obesity, chronic constipation, chronic cough, lifting heavy weights.
Genetics Effect
Some hernias are present at birth time
Symptoms of Hernia
A lump in the groin or abdominal area.
Small painless hernia if not treated grows with time.
A hernia cannot return to the abdominal cavity by manually pushing, at this stage it becomes painful.
At times the hernia becomes 'strangulated' (If a loop of intestine becomes trapped in the weak point in the abdominal wall) which leads to fever, nausea, vomiting and extreme pain without even touching.
Treatment options for Hernia
The only solution to the hernia repair is surgery. The goal of surgery is to push weak tissues in the abdominal cavity and seal the defect. Surgery can be done in two ways: open surgery and laparoscopic repair. In open surgery, a single long cut is made in the area of hernia and herniated organs are pushed back to place. In laparoscopic repair, instead of one long cut, 3-4 small cuts are made about 1 centimeter long. It is done under general anesthesia and has benefits like faster recovery, lesser post-operative pain, and lower infection rate. If you have larger hernias then the laparoscopic method may not be used. Which method is to be chosen, depends upon the location, type, and severity of the hernia. Only doctors can suggest the best treatment by physically examining the patients.
Risks of Hernia Surgery
The most common risks after hernia surgery are bleeding and infection in persons with medical conditions like diabetes, in smokers, in alcoholics, and in old age. Another risk is it can come back that is also called as recurrent hernia. If surgery is done through an advanced technique like 3D Mesh then chances of recurrence are negligible.
