“Warrior” - 16x20 canvas; acrylics
After making a painting of Beast Wars Megatron last year, I had my heart set on doing an Optimus Primal companion piece, and here it is at long last!
The jungle scene was something I originally intended for Megatron, but after "accidentally" seeing a more awesome scenario with him in a lavascape, I decided that Optimus should be the one in the jungle setting. While it wasn't one of the driving ideas for Megatron (though one could still assume it, in retrospect), I wanted to imply that he transformed from his gorilla mode as he jumped out from the foliage. One slight hurdle I faced is the fact I've never had Primal's toy; at least for Megatron, I have the T-Wrecks repaint. Ah, well. At least there are some good pics of the Masterpiece figure online.
I gotta say, I love how these paints work. The trees and grass were literally done with a single shade of green. I've said before, but these paints don't apply at full opacity, so there can be some really great value going on with a single color being used. And even a combination of different colors - Primal's helmet is a blue, a slightly lighter (and bolder) blue, and a light blue, while areas of his chest and his feet were done with blue, light gray, and light blue. It fascinates me how that works.
Well, I don't really have plans to do ALL the characters, but I'm certainly open to doing more. If anything, I'm hoping I can inspire some folks, because I still can't get enough of those old hand-painted profile images on the Beast Wars packaging, and you still really don't see much painted Transformers media in general.
