Dr. Soc's View: Kids and Reading
Did you know that helping your kids learn to enjoy reading can help them improve not only their vocabulary and spelling but also their math skills? In a study beginning in 1970, British researchers studied 6,000 kids and found that children who read for pleasure scored higher in vocabulary, spelling, and math tests than those who did not. Even more surprising is that what children read isn't as important as how often and how much they read. As Kathy Barclay, a professor of early childhood and reading at Western Illinois University says, "There's nothing wrong with [reading about] whatever superhero your child is hooked on. Quantity makes the big difference."
HeroMe is working to develop an activity book that inspires creativity, encourages kids to read, and even helps them write their own adventure story. We hope you will agree that it is a quality addition to your child's reading list. [Available late 2014.]
